Patient-reported outcomes and the identification of subgroups of atrial fibrillation patients
Prevalence and Co-Occurrence of Heavy Drinking and Anxiety and Mood Disorders Among Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Heterosexual Canadians
Objectives. To investigate the prevalence and co-occurrence of heavy drinking, anxiety, and mood disorders among Canadians who self-identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or heterosexual. Methods. Pooled data from the 2007 to 2012 cycles of the Canadian Community Health Survey (n = 222 548) were used to fit logistic regression models controlling for sociodemographic characteristics. Results. In adjusted logistic regression models, gay or lesbian r…
The Influence of Organizational Systems on Information Exchange in Long-Term Care Facilities
Person-centered care is heavily dependent on effective information exchange among health care team members. We explored the organizational systems that influence resident care attendants' (RCAs) access to care information in long-term care (LTC) settings. We conducted an institutional ethnography in three LTC facilities. Investigative methods included naturalistic observations, in-depth interviews, and textual analysis. Practical access to texts …
Adolescents' Perceptions of Parental Influences on Their Smoking Behavior
The purpose of this study was to describe adolescents' perceptions of parental influences on their smoking behavior. Thirty-five adolescents, 14 to 18 years old, provided narrative accounts of their smoking histories in semistructured interviews. Most of the participants recognized that their parents played an important role in shaping their experiences with cigarettes. They described several different ways in which parents influenced their smoki…
The privileged normalization of marijuana use – an analysis of Canadian newspaper reporting, 1997–2007
The objective of this study was to systematically examine predominant themes within mainstream media reporting about marijuana use in Canada. To ascertain the themes present in major Canadian newspaper reports, a sample ( N = 1999) of articles published between 1997 and 2007 was analyzed. Drawing from Manning's theory of the symbolic framing of drug use within media, it is argued that a discourse of 'privileged normalization' informs portrayals o…

A computer-assisted approach to filtering large numbers of documents for media analyses
Media analysts are challenged to acquire selections of documents that are representative of their topics of interest. Conventional search and selection processes are often constrained because of an inability to efficiently filter large amounts of potentially relevant documents and thus pose the risk of introducing bias. We describe a computer-assisted approach to increase the probability of identifying all articles relevant to a topic (in this ca…

Canadian Punjabi Sikh men's experiences of lifestyle changes following myocardial infarction
These findings highlight how collectivist ideals influence Canadian Punjabi Sikh men's adoption of lifestyle changes post-MI. The content and processes by which healthcare providers deliver heart health and rehabilitation to Canadian Punjabi Sikh men might be guided, at least in part, by the collectivist cultural practices underpinning our findings

Toward an Explanation of Observed Ethnic Differences in Youths' Tobacco Use
We examined whether differences in smoking rates of Asian and white/Caucasian youth could be explained by personal (gender, employment status, volunteerism, parental education, and income) and social factors including differences in youths' relationships with their parents, extent of enculturation, and exposure to parental or peer smoking. A survey was conducted of a random sample of schools in 2 cities in British Columbia, Canada to obtain data …
An examination of the smoking identities and taxonomies of smoking behaviour of youth
Self-reported smoking identities appear to provide valid characterisation of the smoking behaviour of youths that complement and elaborate existing taxonomies of smoking behaviour. Questions about self-reported smoking identity should be used in conjunction with smoking behaviour taxonomies when investigating youth smoking behaviours
A Test of the Age-Based Measurement Invariance and Temporal Stability of Antonovsky's Sense of Coherence Scale
The purpose of this investigation was to test the age-related measurement invariance and temporal stability of the 13-item version of Antonovsky's Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC). Multigroup structural equation modeling of longitudinal data from the Canadian National Population Health Survey was used to examine the measurement invariance across 3 age groups (19 to 25 years, n = 1,257; 30 to 55 years, n = 5,326; and ≥60 years, n = 2,213) and to com…

Myocardial infarction symptom recognition by the lay public
Study objective: To find out if gender and ethnicity are associated with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) symptom recognition and the recommendation of enlisting emergency medical services. Design: In an experiment, a random sample of the public was provided a scenario of a person experiencing symptoms of AMI; the gender of the character (male, female, or indeterminate) was manipulated. Setting: Vancouver, Canada Participants: 976 people from a …

Sense of coherence as a moderator of the effects of stressful life events on health
Study objective: To test the hypothesis that Antonovsky’s concept of sense of coherence (SOC) moderates (that is, buffers) the health impacts of stressful life events in a population based sample. Design: Multiple linear and Poisson regression analyses of longitudinal data from a national survey of population health were used to examine the relations among SOC, the experience of recent stressful life events (for example, family breakdown, financi…

Attitudes, Ideology, and the Factor Model
Recent discussions of the ideological basis of attitudes utilize both ordinary and confirmatory factor analysis as analytical representations of ideology. We examine the theoretical implications of employing this modeling style, and conclude that it imposes severe limitations on how ideology can be conceptualized and that it can lead to unreasonable claims about the sources of attitudes. The counting of as the dimensionality of ideology is an exe…

Modeling Acts of Aggression and Dominance as Wife Abuse and Exploring Their Adverse Health Effects
This study, based on data from the Canadian Violence Against Women Survey, determined the effectiveness of modeling of aggression and dominance as causal indicators of forms of wife abuse and their effects on women's health, including physical injuries, psychopathology, alterations to the psyche, anger, alcohol and drug use, and subsequent general health status. When income, education, and age were controlled, abused wives who developed psychopat…
