Prenatal readiness for fatherhood, paternal engagement, and child social–emotional competence
The present study utilized a person-centered approach to identify profiles of prenatal readiness for parenthood among a sample of 126 unmarried Black American fathers living in the southeastern United States. Further, prenatal readiness for fatherhood profiles were examined as predictors of distal outcomes of both paternal engagement in early infancy and socioemotional competence in toddlerhood. Expectant fathers reported prenatally on a series o…
Childhood Environmental Unpredictability and Adolescent Mental Health and Behavioral Problems
Childhood adversity takes a toll on lifelong health. However, investigations of unpredictability as a form of adversity are lacking. Environmental unpredictability across multiple developmental periods and ecological levels was examined using a multiethnic, longitudinal birth cohort (1998–2000) oversampled for unmarried parents. Data were from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 4898 youth at birth; 52% male; 48% Black, 27% Hisp…
The protective role of parental vigilance in the link between risky childhood environments and health
The association between financial distress, conflict management, and co-parenting support for couples receiving child welfare
This study examined financial distress, conflict management, and co-parenting support among 254 couples receiving child welfare services. Using an actor-partner interdependence model, this study tested the indirect association between couples' financial distress and their perceptions of co-parenting support through the use of positive conflict management strategies. Indirect actor effects were found for both mothers and fathers such that financia…
Demographic and developmental patterns in telomere length across adolescence
1,654) in telomere length. We find a quantitatively small but significant average lengthening in telomere length across adolescence and little evidence of associations between telomere length and pubertal development
Annual Research Review
BACKGROUND: Research on early adversity, stress biology, and child development has grown exponentially in recent years. FINDINGS: We review the current evidence for the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis as a stress-mediating mechanism between various forms of childhood adversity and psychopathology. We begin with a review of the neurobiology of the axis and evidence for relations between early adversity-HPA axis activity and HPA ax…
Patterns of Adolescent Regulatory Responses During Family Conflict and Mental Health Trajectories
Four distinct patterns of adolescents' behavioral, emotional, and physiological responses to family conflict were identified during mother-father-adolescent (M = 13.08 years) interactions. Most youth displayed adaptively regulated patterns comprised of low overt and subjective distress. Under-controlled adolescents exhibited elevated observable and subjective anger. Over-controlled adolescents were withdrawn and reported heightened subjective dis…
Prospective Relations between Family Conflict and Adolescent Maladjustment
Early Life Stress
This study examined children's ( N = 79; 9-10 years) and adolescents' ( N = 82; 15-16 years) ability to regulate their emotion expressions of anxiety as they completed a modified version of the Trier Social Stress Test for Children (TSST-C). Approximately half in each age group were internationally adopted from institutional care ( N = 79) and half were non-adopted, age-matched peers ( N = 82). Institutional care was viewed as a form of early lif…
Patterns of children's adrenocortical reactivity to interparental conflict and associations with child adjustment
Examining children's physiological functioning is an important direction for understanding the links between interparental conflict and child adjustment. Utilizing growth mixture modeling, the present study examined children's cortisol reactivity patterns in response to a marital dispute. Analyses revealed three different patterns of cortisol responses, consistent with both a sensitization and an attenuation hypothesis. Child-rearing disagreement…
Do state characteristics matter? State level factors related to tobacco cessation quitlines
State level factors appear to play a part in whether states had established quitlines by mid-2004 and the amount of per capita quitline funding
