Does Spatial Concentration Always Mean a Lack of Integration? Exploring Ethnic Concentration and Integration in Toronto
Toronto is Canada's major immigrant-receiving city and contains a wide diversity of ethnic groups. Although Canadians are generally receptive to immigration there is evidence that some recent immigrant groups, especially those concentrated in Toronto's inner suburbs, are not faring well economically. Immigrants and homelessness—at risk in Canada's outer suburbs
Homelessness is a risk for growing numbers of immigrants. Largely as a result of low incomes, newcomers are more likely than the Canadian‐born to spend over 50 percent of total household income on housing costs. Many newcomers suffer ‘hidden homelessness’. They do not use shelters and other services, but share accommodation, couch‐surf and rely on their social contacts for temporary and precarious housing. The adverse impact of low incomes on the…
Socio‐demographic Impacts of Economic Restructuring on Stockholm's Inner City
Socio-demographic change in inner Stockholm [Sweden] is analyzed using information by individual years, 1970-1990, for total population, net migration and age groups (total and by sex) and by five-year intervals for marital status (total and by sex). The results support the reurbanization model and point to dramatic shifts in inner-city population according to age structure and marital status
Local Strategies in Resale Home Financing in the Toronto Housing Market
Most analyses of mortgage lending within cities have provided only a partial view of home finance. In this paper a typology of home finance is developed and the incidence and spatial patterning of home finance types are evaluated for Metropolitan Toronto in 1976-77.
