Fight or flight
In this speculative historical essay, I employ Buffalo Jones' records to expand upon who can have a voice in the archive, thereby undermining the anthropocentrism inherent in the chronicling of bison conservation. Indeed, this work of “fictocriticism” deploys empathy to recenter the more-than-human voice and ironically uses the observations of the bison's tormentor to move beyond a simplistic anthropomorphic representation. The essay briefly intr…

Social status predicts response to dietary cycling in female rhesus monkeys
Small changes in meal patterns lead to significant changes in total caloric intake. Effects of diet and social status on food intake in female rhesus monkeys
Psychosocial influence on diet preference and caloric intake in female monkeys
Approach to a social stranger is associated with low central nervous system serotonergic responsivity in female cynomolgus monkeys ( Macaca fascicularis )
It is widely hypothesized that individual differences in central nervous system (CNS) serotonergic activity underlie dimensional variation in “impulsive” vs. “inhibited” social behavior in both humans and nonhuman primates. To assess relative impulsivity in a social context, a behavioral challenge involving animals' exposure to a social stranger (termed the “Intruder Challenge”) was recently validated in adolescent and adult male vervet monkeys (…
Group formation of female pigtail macaques (Macaca nemestrina)
Human epidemiological studies have suggested that social variables can modulate the effects of stress on the immune system, and this concept has been gaining increasing attention with positive results emerging from empirical studies using nonhuman primates over the last two decades. Results from a previous study in rhesus monkeys suggested that receiving grooming positively affected recovery of T-helper and T-suppressor cells following the initia…
Estradiol increases somatomedin‐C concentrations in adolescent rhesus macaques ( Macaca mulatta )
Estradiol (E2) may enhance somatomedin‐C (Sm‐C) secretion during puberty in female rhesus monkeys. The present study evaluated the importance of age and acute changes in E2 on Sm‐C secretion. Intact (INT) females at their first ovulation (age 3.5 yr; n = 6) had higher levels of Sm‐C across the ovulatory cycle than did intact adults (ADT) (n = 5). Levels of Sm‐C were similar for both groups during the follicular and luteal phases despite higher fo…
Social stimulation and the resumption of copulation in Rhesus (Macaca mulatto) and stumptail (Macaca arctoides) Macaques
Effects of age, lactation, and repeated cycles on rhesus monkey copulatory intervals
Young, sexually mature female rhesus monkeys copulate on more days prior to conception than do older females, and this prolonged discrete mating period is associated with an earlier rise in serum estradiol prior to the first ovulation of the breeding season. The influence of repeated ovulatory cycles and the presence of a suckling infant on the copulatory patterns were examined in two separate analyses. Extending previous work, young, nulliparous…
Estimation of body fat in female rhesus monkeys
Measurement of height (crown–rump length), body weight, and abdominal subcutaneous fat depth, based on skinfold thickness taken from 13 female rhesus monkeys comprising two age groups were correlated with body fat values derived from tritiated water determinations of total body water. The manner with which each measure was related to percent body fat differed as a function of age of the animal. In the young, nulliparous females, crown–rump length…
Consequences of first pregnancy in rhesus monkeys
Female primates have been thought to be reproductively dis‐advantaged during their early reproductive years. In order to assess the effects of first pregnancy on a female's subsequent reproductive activity, the breeding records of female rhesus monkeys ( Macaca mulatta ) living in provisioned, outdoor‐housed, social groups were examined with respect to age of sexual maturity. Of the 78 colony‐born females contributing to the analysis, 20.5% had t…
Female mating relationships in rhesus monkeys
Descriptions of the sexual behavior of social‐living rhesus monkeys have indicated that mating patterns are characterized by the formation of consort pairs (mutually exclusive male‐female associations) and also that females typically mate with multiple males. These reports raise the question of whether these are two different mating strategies or merely sequential phases in a unitary mating pattern. In order to examine this issue, the copulatory …
Sexual activity of male rhesus monkeys introduced into a heterosexual group
Unfamiliar males were introduced during the breeding season to a stable heterosexual group of rhesus monkeys to determine how the presence of more dominant resident males affected their mating activity and how their entry was received by resident females. Initially, new males were allowed access to females under controlled conditions both in the presence and absence of resident males, simulating situations which may occur under natural conditions…
