  • Labour Taxes, Market Size and Productivity Growth

Open Access•Domenico Ferraro, Soroush Ghazi et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2023•Referencias: 52

How do changes in labour taxes affect innovation and aggregate productivity growth? To answer this question, we propose a quantitative, general equilibrium growth model featuring product and quality innovation with endogenous market structure, estimate its parameters and provide empirical validation for the propagation mechanism of labour tax changes. We find that a temporary cut in flat-rate labour taxes produces a growth acceleration in aggrega…

  • Financial Markets, Industry Dynamics and Growth

    Open Access•Maurizio Iacopetta, Raoul Minetti et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 39

This article introduces corporate governance frictions into a growth model with endogenous market structure. Managers engage in corporate resource diversion and empire building. Shareholders discipline managers with incentive compensation contracts. A reform that mitigates corporate governance frictions boosts firms’ entry and, for a given market structure, has an ambiguous impact on incumbents’ return to product improvement. However, as the mark…

  • Commodity Prices and Growth

    Open Access•Domenico Ferraro, Pietro F Peretto•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2018•Referencias: 32

In this article, we propose an endogenous growth model of commodity‐rich economies in which: (i) long‐run (steady‐state) growth is endogenous and yet independent of commodity prices; (ii) commodity prices affect short‐run growth through transitional dynamics; and (iii) the status of net commodity importer/exporter is endogenous. We argue that these predictions are consistent with historical evidence from the 19th to the 21st century

  • Sustaining the Goose That Lays the Golden Egg

Open Access•Nelson Sá, Michelle Connolly et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2009

This paper proposes a simple model of the trade‐offs perceived by innovating firms when investing in countries with limited intellectual property rights (IPR). The model allows for a continuous treatment of technology transfer and production cost gains occurring through FDI. While it does not consider possible changes in rates of innovation caused by changes in IPR in developing countries, it allows one to uncover a potentially non‐monotonic rela…

  • Technological Distance, Growth and Scale Effects

    Open Access•Pietro F Peretto, Pietro Peretto et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2002•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 17

We present an endogenous growth model in which the scale effect may be positive or negative, but vanishes asymptotically. The mechanism behind this result provides a microfoundation for models that exploit the interaction of growth and market structure to remove the scale effect. When more firms are active, the economy is more specialised in that firms are less likely to work on related problems. This increase in technological distance reduces th…
