Malaria in Al-Andalus
Malaria, also known as paludism, is a parasitic disease caused by protozoa of the genus Plasmodium and transmitted by the female Anopheles mosquito. It is notable for its high morbimortality and its importance throughout human history. References to this parasitosis can be traced in contemporary sources, especially in ancient medical texts. In Al-Andalus, where medical knowledge became influenced by Greco-Latin and Oriental writings, descriptions…
Analysis of Organic Microremains in Extramasticatory Occlusal Dental Grooves
This case study addresses the interpretive intricacies of establishing a cause‐and‐effect relationship between organic microremains and extramasticatory use of the dentition as a “third hand,” particularly in the context of prehistoric thread‐making activities. The evidence derives from an occlusal groove on the mandibular right central incisor (Tooth 41) of a juvenile female (16–20 age‐at‐death) from Burial 117 at Castellón Alto , an Argaric Bro…
La Maqbara de La Torrecilla, Arenas del Rey, Granada
The Islamic cemetery of La Torrecilla was uncovered in 1968 when Antonio Arribas Palau and his team from the Department of Prehistory Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Granada were conducting documentation work on the dolmen necropolis located in this area. Following, the discovery of these first burial sites, several archaeological interventions were undertaken, culminating in four campaigns that concluded in 1976. In this p…
Parasite eggs in 16th-18th century cesspits from Granada (Spain)
This paper presents a key case to approach health conditions in Early Modern Period (16th-18th), through the paleoparasitological study of cesspits in the city of Granada (Spain). • This case of an archaeological site from Granada (Spain) represents one of the few cases of the study of parasites in Early Modern Period in Europe, and the first in this type of material in Spain. • We found the eggs of roundworm, whipworm and liver fluke in the city…
Two cases of cystic echinococcosis reported from al‐Andalus cemeteries (southern Iberia)
The identification of a calcified hydatid cyst in the bioarcheological record is key to the diagnosis of cystic echinococcosis (i.e., hydatid disease), a parasitic infection caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus . This zoonosis can be linked to human–canid interactions, given the reproductive cycle of the parasite (from canids to herbivores/humans as intermediate hosts), and it is commonly associated with agropastoral communities in both…
Introduction of sugarcane in Al‐Andalus (Medieval Spain) and its impact on children's dental health
The introduction of sugarcane in Europe by the Arabs in the 10th century AD brought about a drastic change in gastronomy and oral health. In Southern Spain (Al‐Andalus), sugarcane was mainly consumed by the elite, although its consumption became relatively widespread during the Nasrid Kingdom. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of the introduction of sugar on human diet and oral health by comparing patterns of caries in deciduous tee…
Sex differences in diet and life conditions in a rural Medieval Islamic population from Spain (La Torrecilla, Granada)
OBJECTIVES: Gender differentiation can influence the diet, physical activity, and health of human populations. Multifaceted approaches are therefore necessary when exploring the biological consequences of gender-related social norms in the past. Here, we explore the links between diet, physiological stress, physical activity, and gender differentiation in the Medieval Islamic population of La Torrecilla (Granada, Spain, 13th-15th century AD), by …

Diet and Environment in South‐eastern Iberia During the Bronze Age, Based on Isotope Analysis of Human Remains
A large sample of human bones from a series of archaeological sites in the south‐eastern Iberian Peninsula was selected for δ 13 C and δ 15 N stable isotope analysis. Except for some contrast samples, the remains date from the first half of the second millennium cal BC and are ascribed to the Argar Culture, which developed during the Bronze Age in south‐eastern Iberia. Most authors have considered that this region reached a high degree of social …

Markers of activity patterns in some populations of the Iberian Peninsula
A study was undertaken of musculoskeletal stress markers in the human remains of several ancient populations of the Iberian Peninsula. Frequencies by age group, sex, and side were recorded and compared among the different populations. Results of the study coincide with the available historical and archeological data. The differences observed among these populations are probably due to ecological and socio-cultural factors. Copyright (c) 2004 John…
Possible relationship of cranial traumatic injuries with violence in the south‐east Iberian Peninsula from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age
The main aim of this study was to analyze the presence and distribution of cranial trauma, as possible evidence of violence, in remains from the Neolithic to Bronze Age from the SE Iberian Peninsula. The sample contains skulls, crania, and cranial vaults belonging to 410 prehistoric individuals. We also studied 267 crania from medieval and modern times for comparative purposes. All lesions in the prehistoric crania are healed and none of them can…

Conflicting evidence? Weapons and skeletons in the Bronze Age of south-east Iberia
With its forts, swords, halberds and daggers the Argaric people of south-east Spain has long been seen as a warrior society. The authors dismantle this model, showing that defences around settlements and weapons and knives in tombs have quite different social roles. An analysis of skeletons showed that while these Bronze Age people might have been periodically clubbing each other on the head, they were not doing a lot of lethal stabbing
Violence in the Central Iberian Peninsula during the Bronze Age
One of the most interesting sites of the Bronze Age in the central area of the Iberian Peninsula is La Motilla del Azuer (Daimiel, Ciudad Real), dated between 2200 and 1350bc. The main objective of this study was to investigate interpersonal violence in this site and to report an uncommon case of violent death. No traumatic injury was detected in any child, and men and women significantly differed in the frequency of traumas. More traumatisms wer…
