Beyond Tools
Although there has been considerable research on the use of technology in mathematics education, little is known about how it supports or hinders the development of crucial mathematical concepts, such as functions. This study explores the factors behind creating graphs of functions that accurately reflect mathematical concepts using a modeling problem from a Hungarian eighth-grade textbook. We specifically examine the meta-representational aspect…
Amman city profile
Amman, the capital city of Jordan, and the nation's leading political, economic, and cultural center is a showcase of ʽinformal urbanism’ and ʽrefugee-driven urbanism’ in the Middle East. This paper examines Amman's rapid urban growth driven by internal demographic changes and regional geopolitical events that caused repeated waves of refugees. With a population of 4.92 million in 2024, comprising more than 40% of Jordan's population, Amman occup…
Provincial gentrification in the Global North – A literature review
This study aims to explore the main characteristics of gentrification in provincial cities in the Global North. The paper builds on recent findings of gentrification research in provincial cities focusing on the demand side. For the sake of the study a literature review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. The paper concludes that gentrification in provincial cities is somewhat delayed, less dynamic and often incomplete compared to gent…
Whitestone’—A Specific Polished Stone Tool Raw Material in the Late Neolithic of Southern Hungary
‘Whitestone’ is a characteristic raw material in the Late Neolithic (Tisza and Lengyel culture) polished stone tool (chisel, adze, macehead) archaeological record in Southern Hungary. However, the lithology—the technical term not reflecting a petrographic definition—needs detailed petrographic-analytical investigations (by optical microscopy, PGAA, and SEM-EDS) to determine the exact rock types and to connect them to specific geological sources. …
Exploring the Presence and Absence of Academic Discourse on Public Participation in the European Green Deal
The European Green Deal (EGD), a complex policy program meant to address climate change and ensure a “just, fair and inclusive” transition into a more sustainable and greener Europe, was launched by the EU in 2019. It was clear from the very beginning that the opportunities and costs of the ambitious green transition would be very uneven geographically, not only within the EU but also among its regions and locations. Regions with higher environme…
History behind a Name
As a result of several years of fieldwork and a community archaeology programme, traces of an extensive iron processing centre between Nagykovácsi and Solymár were uncovered. The area is mostly forested, and many extraction and production areas are still visible on the surface. The site was surveyed by teams of the Ferenczy Museum Centre (FMC) and the Közösségi Régészeti Egyesület (KRE) [Community Archaeology Association]. It contributes greatly …
Nagykovácsi – Történet a név mögött
A GIS-based assessment of different income groups’ access to multiple types of green areas in Budapest, Hungary
A growing body of literature demonstrates that the accessibility of urban green spaces may differ across ethnic, minority, racial, and socioeconomic groups. In post-socialist Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries, income has become the most critical factor influencing where people may reside in a city, as well as to the extent to which they can access city services. This paper investigates socioeconomic disparities in access to green areas…
Provenance analysis of red sandstone ground stone tools from the tell site of Hódmezővásárhely-Gorzsa (SE Hungary)
Hódmezővásárhely-Gorzsa is a multi-period tell settlement in South Hungary in the centre of the Great Hungarian Plain, about 15 km southwest of the city of Hódmezővásárhely. The thickest section of the settlement belongs to the Late Neolithic Tisza Culture period. In total, 1061 macrolithic artefacts were unearthed, a quarter of which was polished, and three quarter of which were ground stone tools. Half of the ground stones were made of differen…
Incorporating Problem-Posing into Sixth-Grade Mathematics Classes
Problem-posing is an essential component of mathematics education because, among other reasons, when students are given the opportunity to pose their problems, they can take ownership of their learning and become more engaged in the given subject. Thus, problem-posing can lead to a deeper understanding of the studied mathematical concepts. In a collaborative action research study, the authors explored whether well-structured problem-posing activi…
The Role of Identity and Ontological (In)Security in Return Migration
East-West migration has become a dominant spatial phenomenon in Europe since the step-by-step enlargement of the EU, posing considerable socio-economic and demographic challenges for sending countries. However, little is known about the geopolitics and motivations that inspire a return to the country of origin. The objective of this article is to identify the motivations for emigration, adaptation experiences and decisions of Hungarian migrants w…
The geography of electoral volatility in Hungary
Electoral volatility is understood in the literature as a sign of political instability, weakening social cohesion and the declining influences of existing political parties which threatens the healthy functioning of representative democracy. In this paper, using the Pedersen Index we measure electoral volatility in Hungary at the settlement level between the last three parliamentary elections (2010, 2014 and 2018), with special attention to the …
Assessing the sustainability of urbanization at the sub-national level
The growing concentration of people and wealth often results in imbalances of resource consumption and carrying capacity, therefore, the sustainability assessment of urbanization can offer an important basis for global sustainable transition. This paper aims to provide an analysis of the environmental sustainability of urbanization in Hungary focusing on the long-term changes of ecological footprint and biocapacity at the sub-national level, with…
The availability of green spaces for different socio-economic groups in cities
The provision of urban green spaces (UGS) within a reasonable walking distance/time for each resident has become a major challenge of urban planning. We provide a novel method to map the availability of UGS for different socio-economic groups in cities using a demand–supply composite index (DSCI). Budapest, the capital city of Hungary, has been chosen to test how the DSCI works. The results show significant differences in the availability of UGS …
Vertical segregation in the apartment blocks of Athens and Budapest
Contemporary urban societies are experiencing growing income inequality and rising socio-spatial differentiation. The implication of space in the reproduction of inequality has been extensively discussed in the literature; however, the social consequences of spatial hierarchies at the microscale are largely neglected. Among these hierarchies, the unequal distribution of socio-economic groups by floors in apartment buildings (i.e. vertical segrega…
Integrated petrographic and geochemical analysis of the Langobard age pottery of Szólád, Western Hungary
This study presents the results of the petrographic and geochemical analyses of the entire pottery assemblage discovered at the sixth-century (AD) cemetery of Szólád, Western Hungary, associated with the Langobard era in the territory of the former Roman province of Pannonia. Szólád is one of the most prominent archaeological sites of this period, where prior studies have shown that the cemetery was used for ca. one or two generations by a migrat…
Diversity and local business structure in European urban contexts
This article investigates the interconnectedness between neighbourhood diversity and local business structures. For this purpose, interviews with residents and entrepreneurs were conducted in three European cities: Budapest, Copenhagen, and Milan. The results show that diversity in the economic structure of urban neighbourhoods is equally important with regards to residents’ quality of life, the image of the neighbourhood, and local social cohesi…
The first greenstone axe in Hungary

Measuring socio-economic disparities in green space availability in post-socialist cities
Since the collapse of communism, countries in Central and Eastern Europe have experienced significant socio-economic changes that have affected the urban landscape and the spatial organization of cities. These processes have also generated significant changes in the availability of urban green spaces for local residents, resulting in new forms of inequalities. In the light of recent debate on socio-spatial segregation, the concept of environmenta…
Access to urban green spaces and environmental inequality in post-socialist cities
Access to urban green spaces and environmental inequalities are increasingly on the agenda in contemporary cities due to increasing density of people, widening social inequalities, and limited access to Urban Green Spaces (UGS). This is even so in post-socialist cities where recent urban sprawl and suburbanisation could be strongly linked to the scarcity of adequate green spaces in the inner-parts of cities. This paper examines the provision and …
The Potentials of Cross-Border Tourism Development in the Lower-Tisa Valley
Recent trends in European spatial development show that unexplored border regions have huge potentials for tourism development, what can, on the one hand, positively influence their economic performance, and on the other hand, provide good opportunities for cross-border cooperation. This paper aims to investigate the potentials of tourism development along the Serbian and Hungarian sections of the Tisa river. The analysis of socio-demographic con…

The kaleidoscope of gentrification in post-socialist cities
Countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) have transformed from a centrally planned communist system to a market economy and liberal democracy after 1990. The rapidly changing social and power relations have been gradually manifested in the spatial pattern of cities. After the turn of the millennium, a growing number of papers reported that the regeneration of inner-city neighbourhoods intensified, generating population change in certain area…

Patterns of Socioeconomic Segregation in the Capital Cities of Fast-Track Reforming Postsocialist Countries
Socioeconomic disparities have been rising on both sides of the Atlantic for the last forty years. This study illuminates the relationship among economic inequality, other contextual and institutional factors, and socioeconomic intraurban segregation in Eastern Europe. We draw our empirical evidence from the capital cities of so-called fast-track reforming postsocialist countries: Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, and the Czech Republic. The a…

Urban Renewal in the Inner City of Budapest
After the political and economic changes of 1989–90, the concept of gentrification inspired many urban researchers in central and eastern Europe (CEE). Despite the growing number of papers, there is still a substantial empirical gap concerning the transformation of inner-city neighbourhoods in the CEE. This paper is based on empirical data regarding the physical and social upgrading of neighbourhoods in inner Budapest. The paper argues that gentr…
Development Pathways of Large Housing Estates in Post-socialist Cities
Large housing estates in former state-socialist countries had been hardly affected by social erosion before the political changes. However, the emergence of new, capitalist forms of housing after 1990 started to endanger the position of large housing estates on the local housing market. The question was repeatedly raised in the literature about whether large housing estates of post-socialist cities would experience physical decay and social downg…

Social and Economic Transformation of Historical Neighbourhoods in Budapest
This paper examines the situation of inner‐city neighbourhoods in Budapest with particular reference to the post‐socialist transformation. After 1990 the political and economic transformation of the country generated far reaching changes in socio‐economic patterns within Budapest. Due to privatisation of housing, the liberalisation of the property market, and the growing presence of global capital, the inner‐city neighbourhoods have been rapidly …

The Spatial Mobility of the ‘Creative Class
The main aim of this article is to test Richard Florida's hypothesis regarding the spatial mobility of the ‘creative class’ and the role of soft factors in their decisions concerning their place of residence. Empirical data from 11 European cities suggest that the European ‘creative class’ is not as mobile as Florida suggests. Cultural and institutional constraints contribute to lower mobility rates in Europe. In the article the role of ‘personal…
Pathways Toward European Creative-Knowledge City-Regions
Across Europe there is a lively policy and academic debate on what the essential conditions are for the development of new economic activities in city-regions. The focus is on knowledge-intensive and creative industries. Different theories (glocalization, clustering, embeddedness, path dependence, "hard" and "soft" location factors) identify the essential factors. In this article, we review debates and theories on these conditions and specificall…
