Diatom-inferred total phosphorus from dystrophic Lake Arapisto, Finland, in relation to Holocene paleoclimate
A sediment core from Lake Arapisto, Finland, was examined for fossil diatom assemblages to reconstruct changes in Holocene nutrient availability. Our aim was to investigate the long-term relationship between lake trophic status and climate by comparing the diatom-based phosphorus reconstruction with paleoclimatic proxies. Our results showed that the cold early Holocene was characterized by elevated nutrient conditions concurrent with newly expose…
Sedimentary Cladocera as indicators of past water-level changes in shallow northern lakes
The usability of subfossil Cladocera assemblages in reconstructing long-term changes in lake level was examined by testing the relationship between Cladocera-based planktonic/littoral (P/L) ratio and water-level inference model in a surface-sediment dataset and in a 2000-yr sediment record in Finland. The relationships between measured and inferred water levels and P/L ratios were significant in the dataset, implying that littoral taxa are primar…
Do subfossil Cladocera and chydorid ephippia disentangle Holocene climate trends
We used sedimentary records of Cladocera and chydorid (Chydoridae) ephippia to reconstruct Holocene climate trends from Lake Arapisto in southern Finland. The quantitative temperature record ( T JulyCla ) inferred from subfossil Cladocera was compared with a previously published pollen-based mean annual temperature reconstruction ( T Ann ) from the same lake. Furthermore, proportions of total chydorid ephippia (TCE), indicating proportions of ase…
A 700 year record of temperature and nutrient changes in a small eutrophied lake in southern Finland
This study aimed to distinguish natural and anthropogenic environmental changes, mainly in climate and nutrient conditions, during the past c. 700 years in Lake Hampträsk, southern Finland. We used sedimentary assemblages of aquatic organisms and physical properties of the sediment as proxies for the past environmental conditions. The results of diatom-inferred phosphorus reconstruction indicated that the lake was already meso-eutrophic at c. AD …
Abrupt and consistent responses of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems to the 8200 cal. yr cold event
A 8400—7700 yr cal. BP section of the sediments of a small lake in southern Finland was studied by high-resolution pollen and cladoceran analyses to examine the response of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems to the 8200 cal. yr BP cold event. Furthermore, a pollen-based T ann reconstruction and proportions of chydorid ephippia were used to determine changes in temperature and in the length of open-water season during the event. The pollen data, w…
High-resolution reconstruction of wetness dynamics in a southern boreal raised bog, Finland, during the late Holocene
A high-resolution plant macrofossil analysis was applied to investigate wetness dynamics in a southern Finnish boreal bog, Kontolanrahka, during the last 5000 years. The chronological control and the age—depth model were based on 40 AMS radiocarbon dates. Pollen analysis provided information on regional-scale vegetation changes. Macrofossil analysis revealed prominent changes in vegetation assemblages during the late Holocene, indicating fluctuat…
Chydoid ephippia as indicators of environmental change biostratigraphical evidence from two lakes in southern Finland
This study presents a new proxy method for studying past environmental change. The method is based on the relative abundance of ephippia of chydorid Cladocera (Chydoridae). Ephippia are a modification of the carapace that protects the resting eggs against, for example, freezing and desiccation. Holocene records of chydorid ephippia and other gamogenetic remains (male headshields and postabdomens, and headshields of ephippial females) from two lak…
Contemporaneous Alnus decline and the beginning of Iron Age cultivation in pollen stratigraphies from southern Finland
Latitudinal differences in the influx of microscopic charred particles to lake sediments in Finland
Forest fires produced charcoal throughout the Holocene and charcoal was preserved in lake sediments. This study compares differences in sedimentary charcoal between southern and northern Finland. Yearly influx of the total surface area of the charcoal particles (μm 2 cm -2 yr -1 ) was estimated at different latitudes: two lakes from southern Finland (60° 21'N, 60° 59'N), two from the Kuusamo area (66° 21'N), NE Finland and one lake from NW Finnis…
