The Oxford Handbook of the Economics of Central Banking
The Oxford Handbook of the Economics of Central Banking covers a wide range of central bank topics, including governance, independence, balance-sheet and crisis management, and the challenges in macroeconomic modeling. The book is intended as an up-to-date reference for the current and potential challenges faced by central banks in the conduct of monetary policy and in the search for the maintenance of financial system stability. The approach inv…

Politics and Reformations
This book is the second and larger part of a two-volume Festschrift in honour of Tom Brady. As the author of more than fifty articles and a set of books that have become standards in the field, Brady has long since established himself as a leading authority on the Reformation and early modern central Europe. When Brady started his professional career in 1967 many histories of the Reformation, especially nationalist and modernist ones, had had a s…
Did Recent Experience of a Financial Crisis Help in Coping with the Current Financial Turmoil? The Case of the Nordic Countries
This article considers the lessons learned from the Nordic crises of the 1980s and 1990s and how far problems incurred during the present crisis stem from a failure to act on those lessons. Iceland, which was little affected on the first occasion, has had the worst crisis of any country round the world while Finland, which was worst affected last time, has come through almost unscathed. The ways of avoiding problems caused by having cross‐border …

Pressures on the Stability and Growth Pact from asymmetry in policy
We identify pressures on the SGP that stem from asymmetries in economic behaviour and macroeconomic policy in the euro area. The asymmetry in the way the euro economy operates with respect to inflation, growth and unemployment merits an asymmetric policy response. While Eurosystem monetary policy appears to match the concerns, the asymmetry of fiscal policy in the member states means that they tend to develop their stance in a way that is inconsi…

Social exclusion and macro-economic policy in Europe
This article assesses whether macroeconomic developments in Europe will assist the reduction of social exclusion under EMU. It concludes that the objectives of the Lisbon Council will be difficult to meet. Enlargement, ageing and the `new economy' may alter projections but more rapid structural change has adverse asymmetric effects on average and regional unemployment. As increased public spending can have disincentive effects, combating exclusio…
Beyond the Fringe
This paper seeks to explain why Finland, which is further from the main population and productive centres of Europe and arguably more different and more prone to asymmetric shocks than some countries that have chosen to stay out of Stage 3 of EMU, chose to participate. We argue that economically relatively marginal issues affected the choice. How the decision-making process is conducted can be as important as the balance of information on which t…
Social Exclusion and European Policy
This work analyzes exclusion, a pressing social problem. It discusses what can be achieved by European countries working together and pooling experiences, showing that not only is social exclusion ill-defined, but that there are many differing concepts of social exclusion across Europe.

Peripherality and Northern Ireland
In writing recently about the economic problems that Northern Ireland faces (Begg and Mayes, 1994) we argued, uncontroversially, that an end to the ‘Troubles’ would significantly alter the region's prospects. Our analysis, nevertheless, focused on other factors which might be amenable to policy action. With an end to the Troubles in Northern Ireland now on the cards, these other characteristics of the Northern Ireland economy must be expected to …

A Comparison of Menstrual Bleeding Patterns Associated with Three Iud Models

The principal feature of this means of comparison is that the pattern of menstrual bleeding is assume…
