  • The Labor Market Effects of Immigration Enforcement

Chloe N East, Annie Laurie Hines et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Labor Economics•2023

We examine the labor market effects of Secure Communities (SC), a police-based immigration enforcement policy implemented in 2008–13. Using variation in implementation across local areas and over time, we find that SC decreased the employment of likely undocumented immigrants. These effects are driven not only by deportations but also by adjustments among immigrants who remain in the United States. Importantly, SC also decreased the employment an…

  • Labor Market Discrimination Depending on Dialect and Hometown; Evidence From Japanese Labor Market Composed by Almost Same Race People

Open Access•Toru Kobayashi, Discriminación En et al.•ARTICLE•Dialectologia•2021

In this paper, I estimate the "Employer Learning Model" with a Japanese panel dataset. With this estimation, I would like to test whether Japanese employers modify their use of education for the evaluation of employees' wages and whether wage disparity based on hometown exists in the Japanese labor market that is comprised of only a yellow-skinned race. The results of the analysis show that Japanese employers are learning about employees' product…

  • Education, Birth Order and Family Size

    Open Access•Jesper Bagger, Javier A Birchenall et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2020•Citada por: 1

This article introduces a framework to study parental investments in the presence of birth order preferences and/or human capital cost differentials across children. The framework yields canonical models as special cases and delivers sharp testable predictions concerning how parental investments respond to an exogenous change in family size in the presence of birth order effects. These predictions characterize a generalised quantity–quality trade…

  • Who Marries Differently Aged Spouses? Ability, Education, Occupation, Earnings, and Appearance

Hani Mansour, Terra Mckinnish•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2014

In direct contrast to conventional wisdom and most economic models of marital age gaps, we present robust evidence that men and women who are married to differently-aged spouses are negatively selected. Empirical results show lower cognitive ability, lower educational attainment, lower occupational wages, lower earnings, and less attractive appearance among those married to a differently-aged spouse. These results, obtained using samples of first…

  • The Effects of Intrauterine Malnutrition on Birth and Fertility Outcomes

    Open Access•Rey Hernández-Julián, Hani Mansour et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2014•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 36

This article uses the Bangladesh famine of 1974 as a natural experiment to estimate the impact of intrauterine malnutrition on sex of the child and infant mortality. In addition, we estimate the impact of malnutrition on post-famine pregnancy outcomes. Using the 1996 Matlab Health and Socioeconomic Survey (MHSS), we find that women who were pregnant during the famine were less likely to have male children. Moreover, children who were in utero dur…
