  • Die Entdeckung unserer Kolonien in der Südsee

    Open Access•Rebekka Habermas•ARTICLE•Historische Zeitschrift•2022

  • Die Suche nach Ethnographica und die kunstsinnigen Kannibalen der Südsee. Oder

    Open Access•Rebekka Habermas•ARTICLE•Historische Zeitschrift•2020

  • Colonies in the Countryside

    Rebekka Habermas•ARTICLE•Journal of Social History•2017•Citada por: 1

This article adds the rural area of Wilhelmine Germany to the rich field of studies on the colonial public sphere in order to reassess the role mission associations played. The main argument is that so called mission friends developed a specific agenda that overlapped with the official politics of the mission societies but emphasized different elements while downplaying perspectives crucial to official missionary propaganda. By constructing a het…

  • Benin Bronzen im Kaiserreich - oder warum koloniale Objekte so viel Ärger machen

    Open Access•Rebekka Habermas•ARTICLE•Historische Anthropologie•2017

In this paper, I pursue the problems and discussions raised by colonial objects such as the Benin Bronzes, which had been stolen by British troops in 1897 from the Westafrican kingdom Benin and are exhibited now in European and American museums. I argue that there are two openly discussed problems, which are due to an overwhelming “colonial aphasia” on the one hand and to severe legal and financial conflicts on the other hand, and a third not ope…

  • Peitschen im Reichstag oder über den Zusammenhang von materieller und politischer Kultur. Koloniale Debatten um 1900

    Open Access•Rebekka Habermas•ARTICLE•Historische Anthropologie•2015•Citada por: 1

The article tries to reconstruct the different uses of instruments such as whips for a history of German Colonialism and colonial echoes. Some members of parliament of the German Reichstag used to underline their mostly anti-colonial arguments by showing a whip pretending that exactly these kinds of instruments were used in some very cruel although isolated cases by colonial officers to punish the so called “natives”. However, this use of whips f…

  • Islam Debates Around 1900

    Rebekka Habermas•CHAPTER•Migration and religion•2012

Around 1900 German orientalists, missionaries and representatives of colonial pressure groups started a debate about the so-called Moslem world. This debate created new spaces, connecting Africa, Europe and the Ottoman Empire: It equally shaped and was shaped by old and newly invented religious traditions and it made and was made by changing coalitions between political, academic and economic interests of transnational scientific associations, lo…

  • Piety, Power, and Powerlessness

Rebekka Habermas, Helmut Walser Smith•BOOK•The Oxford handbook of modern…•2012

An examination of eligion and religious groups that prevailed in Germany during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries form the essence of this article. Many citizens of the Wilhelminian Empire believed they were seeing an increasing decline in the importance of religion. This view was also shared by scholars at the time including August Comte and Max Weber. Not only Weber and his contemporaries held this view; subsequent generations of sociologi…

  • Wissenstransfer und Mission

    Rebekka Habermas•ARTICLE•Geschichte und Gesellschaft•2010•Citada por: 1

The article highlights the impact of missions in the late 19th and the beginning of the 20th century : Missionary reports contributed to the development of colonial knowledge in general and to the formation of religious studies in particular. Furthermore these missionary reports, which were also shaped by theoretical assumptions and analytical techniques of contemporary philological disciplines, had direct political effects. The representations o…
