This article is an outgrowth of an attempt to draft a research plan for a comparative study of the labor problem in countries in various stages of industrial development. The authors find that the standard analytical is unsatisfactory for this purpose, and present here their views on the limitations of that framework and their proposals for a broader theoretical perspective.
