Recognising the benefits of protected and conserved areas for nature and people
Area Requirements to Safeguard Earth's Marine Species
Despite global policy commitments to preserve Earth's marine biodiversity, many species are in a state of decline. Using data on 22,885 marine species, we identify 8.5 million km2 of priority areas that complement existing areas of conservation and biodiversity importance. New conservation priorities are found in over half (56%) of all coastal nations, including key priority regions in the northwest Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. We identify w…
Spatial priorities for conserving the most intact biodiverse forests within Central Africa
The forests of Central Africa contain some of Earth's few remaining intact forests. These forests are increasingly threatened by infrastructure development, agriculture, and unsustainable extraction of natural resources (e.g. minerals, bushmeat, and timber), all of which is leading to deforestation and forest degradation, particularly defaunation, and hence causing declines in biodiversity and a significant increase in carbon emissions. Given the…

The Left and the Foreclosure Crisis
This paper completes an investigation into why there was no major social movement around the foreclosure crisis. The basis of this research was a community study that involved surveys of foreclosed people, community members, and activists, as well as participant observation of anti-foreclosure organizations. Initially I found that lack of membership in or contact with civic organizations on the part of those going through foreclosure was at the h…
The White Working-Class and the Foreclosure Crisis
This article investigates why no major social movement has developed around the foreclosure crisis. Initially, the answer to this question was thought to lie in the individualistic ideological beliefs held by those going through foreclosure. That is, it was hypothesized that self-blame and guilt would account for the lack of activism in the streets. To test this hypothesis, a survey of over 400 residents and over twenty in-depth follow-up intervi…
Presence and Persistence
People and Wildlife
Human-wildlife conflict is a major issue in conservation. As people encroach into natural habitats, and as conservation efforts restore wildlife to areas where they may have been absent for generations, contact between people and wild animals is growing. Some species, even the beautiful and endangered, can have serious impacts on human lives and livelihoods. Tigers kill people, elephants destroy crops and African wild dogs devastate sheep herds l…

Men, Women, and the Culture of Engineering
This study focuses on women's position in engineering. A conflict model that emphasizes the interplay of structural and interactional resources is developed to explain the occupational positions of women engineers. A central feature of this model is the “culture of engineering”—the socially defined standard of behavior and interaction among engineers. This model is used to explain the occupational experiences of a cohort of male and female engine…

Seasonal or ecological differences in diet and molar microwear in Cebus nigrivittatus
Dental microwear analyses have raised new hopes and questions for functional morphologists. One hope is that analyses will allow insights into subtle dietary differences of extinct species. One major question is whether seasonal and/or habitat differences in dental microwear are reliably detectable. The extensive collections of Cebus nigrivittatus obtained by the Smithsonian Venezuelan Project allowed us to examine seasonal and habitat difference…
Women in Engineering
The occupational status, experiences, and attitudes of female and male engineers in Southern California were compared by means of 407 fixed choice questionnaires and 82 open-ended interviews. While the women and men were virtually identical in educational qualifications and time on the job, and quite similar in occupational attitudes, their current job status was dissimilar. Fewer women held high status jobs in design or management. These pattern…
Obstacles to Unionization in High-Tech Industries
Explanations for the difficulty faced by unions in their attempts to organize workers in high-tech firms in the Sunbelt are examined. We located our discussion within the theoretical debate regarding the decline of unions in the United States. Our focus is on 125 workers in two high-tech firms in a large Texas city. Based on survey data, personal interviews, and field observations, we describe the work and nonwork experiences of employees as they…

Intergroup loud calls, range size, and spacing in Callicebus torquatus
Observations are reported on the response of a free‐ranging group of Callicebus torquatus to recordings of loud intergroup calls. When the recording consisted of the call of a solo adult male, the group fled from the recording. When the recording consisted of the adult male and female duetting together, the group remained in place and called back to the recording. These results contrast with previously described vocal and spatial responses of C. …
Intrasexual competition and mate choice in primates
Variation in reproductive success in each sex is a consequence of (a) mate choice for an individual's attributes, such as its rank, age, reproductive experience, etc, and the material benefits, such as resources and services, that the individual can provide and (b) intrasexual competition for the preferred attributes and material benefits. This paper reviews the many factors influencing reproductive success in primates, examines the mechanisms pr…
