  • Detecting political units in archaeology—an Iron Age example

    Ralph M Rowlett•CHAPTER•Archaeological Approaches to…•2003

The Marnian Var iant is well-known to be easily recognized by inspection among other La Tène sub-areal manifestations. The westoriented graves are full of a black grave fill, and the predominantly inhumed supine skeletons are supplied with a seemingly complete inventory of dress items, equipment, artefacts of personal interest, and food and distinctive pottery for the afterlife. Most of the cemeteries include at least one, and sometimes several, …

  • Stratified Iron Age House Floors on the Titelberg, Luxembourg

Ralph M Rowlett, Homer L Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•1982

Continued excavations at the center of the hillfort "Titelberg," near Pétange in extreme SW Luxembourg were conducted in 1976–1978 by the University of Missouri at Columbia and the Luxembourg Musées de l' Etat. Underneath the previously dug late Augustan mint foundry were found 14 other floor levels directly in alignment. The stratigraphically lowermost seven floors did not contain the residues of minting operations, but the upper seven, dating f…

    Ralph M Rowlett, M C Robbins•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•1982•Citada por: 21•Referencias: 12

Frequency curves of a particular class of artifacts, such as pottery, from each stratum assemblage have been used to derive relative chronologies and simultaneously models of cultural change. Such empirical counts do not usually take into account post‐depositional processes affecting archaeological remains. A distinctive type of ceramic, coin molds, from the Iron Age hillfort at the Titelberg in Luxembourg provides the model for presenting a meth…

Weather-stranded Norse explorer-refugees are reported in the medieval Icelandic Landnámabók to have dug into an archaeological site in eastern Greenland about A.D. 981. Enough details are given to suggest that they investigated a Dorset Culture site. This 1,000-year-old account must be the oldest known archaeological report for the New World

  • Separation of Bone, Charcoal, and Seeds by Chemical Flotation

    Open Access•Connie Cox Bodner, Ralph M Rowlett•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1980

Gravel, bone, carbonized seeds, and charcoal recovered from a 2,000 year old cereal pit were successfully separated by chemical flotation. Specific gravities of each material were determined experimentally, and then for each pair of materials to be separated (e.g., bone from gravel, seeds from charcoal), a solution with a specific gravity intermediate between those of the two materials was used for flotation. Optimal sample sizes and possible sou…

Homer L Thomas, Ralph M Rowlett et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•1976•Citada por: 1

The center of the hillfort “Titelberg,” near Petange in extreme SW Luxembourg, was investigated in 1972-74 by the University of Missouri at Columbia and the Luxembourg Musées de l'État. The American excavations have revealed a side street which, when considered with evidence unearthed by the Luxembourgers, indicates an insula system for the hillfort in Gallo-Roman times. Habitation lasted until the 4th century A.C., but this part of the site was …

Thermoluminescence analysis can reveal when archaeological lithics especially siliceous stones such as flint, chert and the like have been subjected to heat treatment prior to chipping. This determination can serve as the first step in the dating of these stones, as well as stones exposed otherwise to heating, utilizing the same principles as for the thermoluminescent dating of pottery. The oldest known example of heat treatment verified by this …
