When teaching failed in the interracial communication course
The current project is an autoethnographic account of the author’s experience as the instructor of a course on interracial communication at a southern U.S. university. Antecedent factors combined with course content and the instructor’s inadequate approach to dialogue as a mode of learning to create a classroom setting that was fraught with tension and that limited the instructor’s ability to facilitate student growth
Parents’ Narratives in an Online PHPV Forum
The authors analyzed messages from an online support group for parents of children with Persistent Hyperplastic Primary Vitreous. This eye disorder, while not life-threatening, affects children’s eyesight and can impinge on the lives of parents and caretakers. Uncertainty and Stigma in the Experiences of Prostate Cancer Survivors
This study examines stigma and identity changes in prostate cancer survivors’ illness accounts. Noteworthy events included diagnosis, the consequent search for information, the treatment decision, and posttreatment changes. Although their stories lacked the before/after identity shift of most illness narratives, survivors characterized themselves as uncertain upon diagnosis, then as information seekers. Depictions of Husbands in Miscarriage Accounts
Little research has employed social support literature to investigate the support needs of women coping with the loss of a child—or the potential of partners to fulfill those needs. The researchers gathered miscarriage narratives through interviews with 24 women and analyzed the depictions of supportive and unsupportive responses from husbands.
