Experiences of seeking and accessing medical care among persons with major depression
The findings of the study indicated that the impact of progressive depressive symptoms on the participants' daily lives was a strong motivation for them to seek professional help. The obligation to care for and support their family prevented them from initially disclosing their depressive symptoms to family members, but eventually prompted them to seek professional help and persist in follow-up treatment. Some participants experienced unexpected …
Symptom Burden of Children with Cancer and Parental Quality of Life
Symptom burden was prevalent in Chinese children with cancer living in the community. Children's symptom burden is an important factor in predicting parental stress level, which simultaneously and directly lower parents' quality of life. The evidence in this study enlarges the knowledge base about the mediating effect of parental stress on the association between the symptom burden of children with cancer and their parents' quality of life. This …
Experiences of Older Adults with Frailty Not Completing an Advance Directive
Advance care planning (ACP) facilitates individuals to proactively make decisions on their end-of-life care when they are mentally competent. It is highly relevant to older adults with frailty because they are more vulnerable to cognitive impairment, disabilities, and death. Despite devoting effort to promoting ACP among them, ACP and advance directive completion rates remain low. This study aims to explore the experiences among frail older adult…

The dimensionality of approaches to learning
Background. A recent review of research into students' approaches to learning suggested there was good evidence of meaning and reproducing orientations to study. In the former the student seeks the underlying meaning in study material, while in the latter attention is directed towards reproducing the text itself. The most widely used inventories of learning approaches also include a factor for an achieving approach and one contains another factor…
The influence of active learning experiences on the development of graduate capabilities
Surveys at a university in Hong Kong indicated that graduates of discrete part-time programmes perceived significantly higher development in eight out of nine graduate capabilities than their counterparts in full-time programmes. Several possible explanations are considered and rejected. The conventional view that capabilities are nurtured through immersion in a stimulating campus environment was not applicable, as the part-time students spent le…
Reconsidering the dimensions of approaches to learning
Background. The dimensionality of student approaches to learning, inherent in the instruments commonly used to measure them, lacks consistency with research, particularly concerning Asian students, conducted since the original instruments were devised. Aims. The study examined four strands of evidence to examine whether, and if so how, the dimensionality of the instruments should be modified. 1. A qualitative study of students' perceptions of the…
Characterising a teaching and learning environment conducive to making demands on students while not making their workload excessive
A qualitative study of perception of workload found that it was very weakly related to hours of work. The complex construct was better characterised as being influenced by a broadly conceived teaching and learning environment. It appeared to be possible to encourage students to perform a great deal of high‐quality work, without complaining about excessive workload, by attention to this environment. This hypothesis was tested quantitatively with s…

Examining the Cultural Specificity of Approaches To Learning in Universities in Hong Kong and Sydney
Western research has characterized approaches to learning for specific learning tasks as discrete deep and surface approaches, distinguished by whether the intention is to understand or memorize. A more appropriate classification scheme for Hong Kong research is a continuum between deep and surface poles. In this article, the authors examine whether this characterization applies also to the West. University students in Australia ( n = 1,146) and …

Development of a Questionnaire to Measure the Level of Reflective Thinking
Many courses aim to promote reflective thinking or reflection upon practice, but there is a scarcity of readily usable instruments to determine whether students engage in reflective thinking and, if so, to what extent. This paper reports the development and testing of such an instrument. To ensure validity, the constructs measured were derived from the extensive literature on reflective thinking, particularly the writing of Mezirow. A combination…

Does the Use of Student Feedback Questionnaires Improve the Overall Quality of Teaching
An investigation was conducted into 3- or 4-year departmental sets of student feedback questionnaire data from one university. Only four out of 25 departments had significant changes to any of the six dimensions in the 3- or 4-year period, and three of these significant changes were falls. There is, therefore, no evidence that the use of the questionnaire was making any contribution to improving the overall quality of teaching and learning of the…

Establishing the validity and reliability of course evaluation questionnaires
This article uses the case of designing a new course questionnaire to discuss the issues of validity, reliability and diagnostic power in good questionnaire design. Validity is often not well addressed in course questionnaire design as there are no straightforward tests that can be applied to an individual instrument. The authors propose the technique of establishing validity by deriving constructs from naturalistic qualitative research--in this …

China now is only at its early stage in capacity building for smoking cessation counsellors and the experience of Hong Kong, 20 years ahead in tobacco control, in developing nur…
Disregard for Outsiders
The place of outsiders-strangers and otherwise irrelevant others-in the cultural logic of a society holds likely consequences for social perception. The authors begin by describing how outsiders are viewed in Western, Japanese, and Chinese societies. Comparing the three groups, it is proposed that the Chinese are most strongly disposed to disregard or ignore those outside their networks of affiliation and practical involvement. To test this claim…
