An Analysis of Out-of-Wedlock Childbearing in the United States
This paper relates the erosion of the custom of shotgun marriage to the legalization of abortion and the increased availability of contraception to unmarried women in the United States. The decline in shotgun marriage accounts for a significant fraction of the increase in out-of-wedlock first births. Several models illustrate the analogy between women who do not adopt either birth control or abortion and the hand-loom weavers, both victims of cha…
The Fair Wage-Effort Hypothesis and Unemployment
This paper introduces the fair wage-effort hypothesis and explores its implications. This hypothesis is motivated by equity theory in social psychology and social exchange theory in sociology. According to the fair wage-effort hypothesis, workers proportionately withdraw effort as their actual wage falls short of their fair wage. Such behavior causes unemployment and is also consistent with observed cross-section wage differentials and unemployme…
Symposium on the Budget Deficit
Is the ballooning federal budget deficit a serious economic problem? The papers in this symposium provide four perspectives on this issue. Robert Barro and Robert Eisner disagree sharply with the “majority” opinion concerning deficits. In contrast, Edward Gramlich and Douglas Bernheim are more sympathetic to the view that budget deficits lower national saving and thus contribute to a reduction in future living standards
Efficiency Wage Models of the Labor Market
One of the more troubling aspects of the ferment in macroeconomics that followed the demise of the Keynesian dominance in the late 1960s has been the inability of many of the new ideas to account for unemployment remains unexplained because equilibrium in most economic models occurs with supply equal to demand: if this equality holds in the labor market, there is no involuntary unemployment. Efficiency Wage Models of the Labor Market explores the…

Factor Mobility, Regional Development, and the Distribution of Income
A three-factor model of a small country or region is used to analyze the general equilibrium consequences of three frequently advocated regional development policies--investment subsidies, migration incentives, and educational expenditures. The analysis focuses on policy-induced changes in absolute and relative factor earnings. The results link changes in the distribution of income to the degree of complementarity and substitutability among facto…
