A Scoping Review About the Adoption and Adherence of Physical Activity Mobile Applications by Older People
Background: One strategy to promote physical activity (PA) practice is the use of mobile apps. However, older people may face difficulties using these technologies. Reviewing relevant literature can support the development of more accessible apps. Objective: To map the factors related to adoption and adherence of PA mobile applications by older people. Methods: Studies were searched in five databases and two additional strategies were performed. …
Recommendations for Technoly Re-Invention for an Older Market
Older people can often fall on the wrong side of the ‘digital divide’ in terms of accessing and enjoying new digital technology. One approach to this issue is to provide training programmes and customisation techniques for using existing technology. However, another is to re-invent technology with and for older people themselves. In this paper, I propose four recommendations for re-invention, and illustrate these with examples in the domain of di…
Community media and design
This article details the benefits and challenges of Insight Journalism, a community engagement and research methodology developed by the interdisciplinary Bespoke project. Based in two under-resourced urban neighbourhoods in North West England, Bespoke combined community media with participatory digital design by supporting local residents to create a series of'old' and ‘new’ media outputs that were exhibited locally and used within an innovative…
Now, where was I? negotiating time in digitally augmented autobiographical performance
This article examines the complex interplay of past, present and future in the unfolding moment of performance of digitally augmented autobiographical storytelling. Performers of autobiography, whether on stage or in everyday life, engage in a practice of identity construction in the dynamic and shifting moment of performance. This requires a negotiation with unstable memories, photographic traces and the responses of the co-present audience. The …
The secret life of teens
In this article we describe findings from a recent study in which we interviewed four British teenage girls about their photo display practices, online and offline, in family homes. We adopted a phenomenological approach to inquiry, with a particular interest in exploring how photographic representations of self and family signal self-development in emerging adulthood. Findings reveal how teens portrayed themselves differently to friends, online,…

Good Intentions
This paperlooks at the context of materialised memories-the consumption and framing of photographs. Ethnographic workin British homes unearthed diverse ways of consuming and displaying photos. We propose that these modes of framing mirror the relationships within and surrounding the household, andlocate themin short-hand time frames characteristic of the socialexchanges appropriate to those relationships. Through framing, people flag their collec…

Using E-mail for Personal Relationships
Do the gender differences found when men and women maintain personal relationships in person and on the phone also emerge when they use electronic mail? Alternately, does e-mail change these ways of interacting? The authors explore the types of relationships women and men maintain by e-mail, differences in their e-mail use locally and at a distance, and differences in the contents of messages they send. The findings are based on qualitative and q…
Management of Repair in Human-Computer Interaction
This article reports an investigation of the initiation and management of repair in human-computer interaction from a conversation-analytic perspective. It describes some ways in which pairs of novice users deal with what they see as trouble in the operation of a multiwindow database system called Sales and Marketing Information (SAMi). A typical sequence has the character of a user request followed by a pause or computer granting, leading to use…
Some Lessons From an Exercise in Specification
Formulating precise descriptions of human-computer interactions is a prerequisite for the principled design, implementation, and evaluation of interactive systems. This article reports an exercise in interaction specification using Foley and Van Dam's (1982) multilayered method of documenting the design of a user-computer interface. The specification was used to communicate the intended behaviour of a Forms Helper system from a design team to an …
