  • Community Mental Health in the Time of Covid-19

Amanda M Brouwer, Trisha M Karr et al.•ARTICLE•Social Work in Public Health•2025

The experiences of social and community mental health (SCMH) workers serving in rural communities during the COVID-19 pandemic are understudied. Therefore, nine SCMH workers were interviewed about challenges and strategies for providing mental health services in rural communities in the wake of COVID-19. Through qualitative analyses three primary themes emerged; challenges, needed resources and strategies for addressing mental health needs. Chall…

  • The Self-as-Doer Identity and Physical Activity

    Amanda M Brouwer•ARTICLE•Identity•2020

Although psycho-social interventions have been proposed to increase physical activity, variability in the degree to which physical activity is maintained still exists. The self-as-doer identity, an identity which describes an individual in terms of identification with doing a behavior, predicts physical activity and shows promise for the maintenance of health behaviors. Yet less is known about how the self-as-doer promotes physical activity. One …

  • Shared Illness and Social Support Within Two HIV-Affected African American Communities

    Open Access•Katie E Mosack, Patricia E Stevens et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2016•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 43

A key source of resiliency within HIV-affected African American communities is informal social support. Data from dyadic conversations and focus groups were used to address the following research question: What are HIV-positive African Americans' social support experiences within their informal social networks in response to HIV-related problems? Circumstances that exacerbated HIV-related problems included others' fear of contagion, reticence to …

  • Motivating Healthy Diet Behaviors

    Amanda M Brouwer, Katie E Mosack•ARTICLE•Self and Identity•2015

Background: Self-identity predicts healthy eating behaviors and intentions above and beyond Theory of Planned Behavior components (TPB; i.e., attitudes, perceived behavioral control, and subjective norms), but interventions exploring the relationship between self-identity and motivation are limited. Self-as-doer identity may be an important point of intervention for healthy eating behaviors (Houser-Marko & Sheldon, 2006). Therefore, I investigate…

  • An examination of actor-partner social support effects on HIV-related problems and interpersonal outcomes among a sample of HIV-positive African American dyads

    Katie E Mosack, Katherine A Rafferty et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Ethnic…•2015•Citada por: 1

Although our study precludes drawing causal conclusions, we found evidence of a relationship between the personal experience of HIV-related problems, communication about these problems, and perceptions of social support among a small sample of HIV-infected African American dyads. These findings suggest the need to consider how support-related communication within HIV-infected dyads might influence and be influenced by problem perceptions

  • I Am a Blood Sugar Checker”

    Amanda M Brouwer, Katie E Mosack•ARTICLE•Self and Identity•2011

The mechanisms by which self-efficacy contribute to improved diabetes self-care behaviors are poorly understood. We propose that the “self-as-doer” identity might help explain the relationship between behavioral self-efficacy and health behavior enactment. Adults with diabetes (type I = 200, type II = 130) completed self-report measures assessing diabetes management-specific self-efficacy, self-as-doer, and self-care behaviors. We tested the inte…

  • Christian Vocation

    Open Access•Jennifer S Feenstra, Amanda M Brouwer•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychology and Theology•2008

A great deal of growth takes place during the college years. Christian college students may be involved in exploring their spirituality and in finding what God is calling them to do, their vocation, as well as in identity development. In this study one hundred twenty-eight women and sixty-three men (M age = 20.3 years, SD = 1.7) from a Christian liberal arts college were surveyed. In general, identity development and greater understanding of Chri…
