  • Getting Back to the Lake

Open Access•Satu Koivisto, Petro Pesonen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Wetland Archaeology•2026

Hunter-gatherer wetland sites in boreal Fennoscandia are rare, deeply buried, and difficult to detect, making them a still critically underutilised archaeological resource. However, the moist anoxic conditions of waterlogged contexts preserve organic materials that are typically lost on boreal drylands, thus offering unique tools to explore the past. Small-scale excavations in 2020–2021 at the wetland site of Järvensuo 1, southwest Finland, uncov…

  • Wattling for Fish

Open Access•Satu Koivisto, TERJE STAFSETH et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Wood…•2025

The importance of forest resources to the Stone Age populations of Northern Europe has not been comprehensively studied, despite wood raw materials forming the basis for life, settlement, mobility, and subsistence. In addition to firewood and construction needs, wood has been used for a wide range of purposes. The paucity of research is due to the limited preservation of organic materials at archaeological sites in drylands, whereas wetlands and …

  • Lolland’s changing landscapes

    Open Access•Gustav Wollentz, Roy Van Beek et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2025•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 56

Many parts of Europe are today facing a wide range of societal and environmental challenges that demand a high degree of resilience and adaptability. Archaeology has an important role to play by providing novel perspectives on how people have been living with, and adapting to, change in dynamic environments over considerable time. This paper adopts a trans-chronological perspective on human-environment interaction in the Syltholm Fjord on the Dan…

  • Fishing with Stationary Wooden Structures in Stone Age Denmark

    Open Access•Satu Koivisto, H K Robson et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•2024•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 54

An abundance and diverse range of prehistoric fishing practices was revealed during excavations between 2012 and 2022 at the construction site of the Femern Belt Tunnel, linking the islands of Lolland (Denmark) and Femern (Germany). The waterlogged parts of the prehistoric Syltholm Fjord yielded well preserved organic materials, including the remains of wooden fish traps and weirs, and numerous vertical stakes and posts driven into the former sea…

  • Artisans of the Stone Age

    Open Access•Satu Koivisto, Jenni A Suomela et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2024•Referencias: 7

Rare organic artefacts, including wooden figurines and fishnet fragments from the Stone Age (c. 6000-2000 BC) were found in 2020 and 2021 during excavations of a wetland site in Finland. The first results from analysing the artefacts, crafting methods and raw materials provide novel insights into artisanship, material know-how and visual culture of northern hunter-fisher-gatherers

  • Between earth and water

    Open Access•Satu Koivisto, Antti Lahelma•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2021•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 4

Figurines made of wood, bone, amber, clay and lithics are occasionally discovered in prehistoric contexts in Fennoscandia, but the discovery, in 2020, of a unique wooden snake figurine during the excavations of a Neolithic wetland site in Finland broadens our understanding of the worldview of northern peoples 4400 years ago

  • Out of the Peat

Satu Koivisto, Niko Latvakoski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2018•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 30

The huge scientific and interpretive value of wetland archaeological sites has been well demonstrated in several studies. The management of the archaeological resource of wetland landscapes is problematic, however, and there is an urgent need for noninvasive techniques to detect waterlogged organic archaeological remains. Stationary wooden fishing structures associated with fishing sites constitute an important wetland archaeological resource in …

  • Subneolithic Fishery in the Iijoki River Estuary, Northern Ostrobothnia, Finland

    Open Access•Satu Koivisto•ARTICLE•Journal of Wetland Archaeology•2012•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 2

A wetland site discovered accidentally in the western part of the Kierikki area in Yli-Ii, Northern Ostrobothnia, Finland, surprised archaeologists in the mid 1990s by its size and the rare degree of preservation of the organic finds. A number of wooden objects had already been found during the draining of the present-day peatland agricultural field in the 1950s, but the age and the full scientific value of the prehistoric fishery were only recog…
