Secular trends in age at menarche in Norwegians born from 1840 to 2008
Seasonal variability in body mass index, waist circumference, and skinfolds in Norwegian children
Seasonal variation was detected for all anthropometric measures, but differences in the direction of the effect between measures of global (BMI), central (WC) or subcutaneous (SF) adiposity suggest a more complex mechanism that needs further exploration
Sars-CoV-2 infection prevention and control measures in Belgian schools between December 2020 and June 2021 and their association with seroprevalence
This trial is registered under the NCT04613817 ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier on November 3, 2020
Deep phenotyping of pubertal development in Norwegian children
Ultrasound-based assessments of puberty provided novel references for breast developmental stages and enabled the measurement of testicular volume on a continuous scale. Endocrine z -scores allowed for an intuitive interpretation of changing hormonal levels during puberty on a quantitative scale, which, in turn, provides opportunities for further analysis of pubertal development using machine-learning approaches
Predictors and consequences of non‐suicidal self‐injury in relation to life, peer, and school factors
INTRODUCTION: Numerous life, peer, and school-related factors have been found to be associated with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents; however, most studies have not explored the possible reciprocal nature of these associations. The aim of the current study was to examine bidirectional and longitudinal associations between NSSI and several life, peer, and school-related factors (i.e., stressful life events, peer relationships, aca…
Cross-sectional study of child and adolescent growth in Ecuador
Child growth is internationally recognized as an important indicator for monitoring health in populations. There exists a wide controversy regarding the use of international growth standards versus local references. This study seeks to construct reference growth curves for school-age Ecuadorian children and adolescents, and to compare them with World Health Organization (WHO) standards, in order to identify the differences and their public health…

Associations between different weight‐related anthropometric traits and lifestyle factors in Norwegian children and adolescents
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between weight-related anthropometric measures and children's eating habits, physical activity and sedentary lifestyle at a population level. METHODS: Data from the Bergen Growth Study were used to study the association of z-scores of waist circumference (WC), weight-to-height ratio (WHtR), subscapularis (SSF) and triceps (TSF) skinfolds and BMI, with lifestyle factors in 30…

Nutritional status and height, weight and BMI centiles of school-aged children and adolescents of 6–18-years from Kinshasa (DRC)
Children from Kinshasa fall below WHO centile references. This study established up-to-date centile curves for height, weight and BMI by age in children and adolescents. These reference curves describe the current status of these anthropometric markers and can be used as a basis for comparison in future studies
BMI and BMI SDS in childhood
Background Early detection of abnormal weight gain in childhood may be important for preventive purposes. It is still debated which annual changes in BMI should warrant attention. Aim To analyse 1-year increments of Body Mass Index (BMI) and standardised BMI (BMI SDS) in childhood and explore conditional change in BMI SDS as an alternative method to evaluate 1-year changes in BMI. Subjects and methods The distributions of 1-year increments of BMI…
Interrelationships between anthropometric variables and overweight in childhood and adolescence
The interrelationships between BMI SDS and five standardized overweight related anthropometric variables were dependent on age, being weakest in the youngest age group. Independent of sex and age, WC SDS was in this study superior to other anthropometric variables in contributing to variation in BMI SDS during childhood
Important periods of weight development in childhood
A high birth weight and an increasing BMI SDS during the first 9 months and high BMI from 2 years of age proved important landmarks for the onset of being overweight at 8 years of age. The risks of being overweight at 8 years appear to start very early. Interventions to prevent children becoming overweight should not only start at a very early age but also include the prenatal stage
Impact of instrument error on the estimated prevalence of overweight and obesity in population-based surveys
Failure to calibrate measuring instruments is likely to lead to overestimation of the prevalence of overweight and obesity in population-based surveys
Growth references for 0–19 year-old Norwegian children for length/height, weight, body mass index and head circumference
Because of the observed secular trends in growth, it is advised to use the new references, which have been endorsed by the Norwegian Department of Health
References for growth and pubertal development from birth to 21 years in Flanders, Belgium
The ongoing secular trend in height and weight makes growth charts previously used in Belgium obsolete. New representative charts for growth and pubertal development are introduced. For weight monitoring, it is advised that the now-available BMI growth charts are used
References for growth and pubertal development from birth to 21 years in Flanders, Belgium
Breastfeeding, growth and growth standards
Breastfeeding, growth and growth standards
Growth of breastfed children is similar to the WHO standards for length, but not for other traits. In Flanders, the use of the recent local growth reference is advised for both breastfed and formula-fed children
