From Surface to Subsurface
While the site of Muntenii de Jos – La Biserică (Vaslui County) was first documented in 1910 based on surface finds, archaeological investigations were limited to a single field walk in 1976 that vaguely dated the settlement. In 2025, our team initiated a comprehensive non-invasive research project to map the planimetry, function, and chronology of this archaeological site. The investigation integrated guided drone flights for obtaining an orthom…
Integrating non-invasive research methods in the study of the Late Bronze Age ashmounds from NE Romania
The functionality of the Noua communities’ ashmounds; argumentation for the potential of using geophysical measurements in studying the Late Bronze Age settlements from NE Romania
Geophysical prospection for development-led archaeology. The section 3 of Sibiu-Pitești highway, Romania
Inclusion of non-intrusive techniques in development-led (preventive) archaeology; enhancing the precision and efficiency of archaeological excavation
Mounds of Fire! The Tumular Necropolis of Borșa-La Cișmele (Vlădeni, Iași County)
North-eastern Romania benefits of a high density of tumuli, belonging to various prehistoric or historic communities. Previous endeavors of our team have identified within this workspace, with the help of LiDAR data, aerial photographs and cartographical supports, a number of 1791 of such mounds, usually placed on hilltops, forming somewhat-linear arrangements, but also exceptional situations, such as the case of the tumular necropolis of Borșa- …
Through Geometry Towards Functionality. Case Study
During Late Bronze Age, the evolutions of previous archaeological cultures (from the Middle Bronze Age) are continued and completed, but there are also two important cultural complexes emerging, namely: Noua-Sabatinovka-Coslogeni and Zimnicea-Plovdiv. The subject of interest in the present study is represented by Noua culture, attested in a vast area, from the middle and upper Dniester, to the east of Apuseni Mountains and from the Subcarpathian …
Fragmentary Discoveries Without Context - What Can We Learn More? An Archaeometric Approach on a Fortuitous Find From North-Eastern Romania
The ʽaccidentalʼ discovery of archaeological material represents an ordinary fact in today’s archaeology. Unfortunately, most of these discoveries have no archaeological context, thwarting the possibility of integrating the objects in more complex studies. In this context, based on the type of data that the archaeometric study of metal objects provides (information regarding prehistoric metallurgy, especially the used alloys and technologies), we…
A bolt from the blue
The article presents the context and multiple investigations of an unexpected discovery, made during the 2020 excavations, from the Ruginoasa-Dealul Ruginii Chalcolithic site in north-eastern Romania. The site, known before our research (aerial photography, geomagnetic survey, test trenches) only for its visible traces of WW2, belongs to the Cucuteni culture, phase A, and consists of five rows of burned dwellings and several pits. The surprise, a…
New discoveries concerning the end of the Bronze Age in Jijia catchment
The research aims to introduce into the scientific circuit a significant number of settlements specific to Late Bronze Age, which present ashmounds on the soil surface, identified using aerial images and LiDAR measurements. The subsequent verification of the settlements and the identification of archeological material allowed a precise chronological and cultural framing of the 72 sites
Understanding technological innovations through experiment. Construction and testing of Chalcolithic pottery kilns
Besides its contribution to understanding the formation process of large settlements and complex social organization in the late period of Cucuteni-Trypillia, the site of Stolniceni (Republic of Moldova) provided new data on the construction and spatial distribution within the site of pottery kilns. The extensive magnetic surveys revealed a large settlement, with more than 350 burnt dwellings, hundreds of pits, ditches, paths, and 19 kilns. Of th…
