Safety in an unsafe world
This paper draws on 380 face-to-face interviews with Syrian refugees living in Istanbul. It considers their perceptions of risk and safety in Istanbul. The Polarization of Traumas and Selective Remembering
Based on a national survey funded by the TÜBİTAK SOBAG Program, conducted with 1,957 respondents in 12 cities during 2013‐2014, this article examines the political memory of the 1960, 1971, 1980, and 1997 coups by describing the memories and accompanying emotions of Turkish adults. Understanding and Measuring the Social Inclusion of Syrian Refugees in Istanbul
Based on survey data collected during 2016–2017 from 380 Syrians in Zeytinburnu, an inner-city district of Istanbul, Turkey, this article uses multidimensional scaling to measure their social inclusion. The study shows how the level of social inclusion, treated as a dependent variable, changes with the refugees’ age, gender, education level, length of stay in Zeytinburnu, and health conditions. Female Emotional Labour in Turkish Call Centres
This article discusses Turkish women workers' experiences in Turkey's growing call centre sector, focusing on the emotional labour they perform in relation to job satisfaction and gendered work patterns within the Turkish labour market. The study uses both quantitative and qualitative data generated from six Turkish cities. Concordance and Discordance in Turkish Civil-Military Relations, 1980–2002
Based on the nature of the military's relations with social and political spheres and actors, this study delineates four types of militaries: professional, nation's army, predatory praetorian and popular praetorian. The article shows that the Turkish military constitutes one of the rare epitomes of popular praetorian military and discusses the current state and prospects of civil-military relations in Turkey
