Jean-Sébastien Lenfant, Pascal Bridel•ARTICLE•European Journal of the History…•2025

Pascal Bridel is an eminent member of the community of historians of economic thought, well known for his numerous works on the history of monetary theory and the Lausanne School. The publication o

  • Ronald Schettkat, The Behavioral Economics of John Maynard Keynes. Microfoundations for the World We Live In

    Open Access•Jean-Sébastien Lenfant•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2024•Referencias: 1

When I started reading The Behavioral Economics of John Maynard Keynes, I could not figure out what would be the specific literature dealt with in the book. For sure, the subtitle Microfoundations for the World We Live In sets the stage for the ambition of the author to provide behavioral elements regarding economic agents and the most important decisions that bear on the final macroeconomic state of the economy, in order to convey an empirical f…

    Open Access•Jean-Sébastien Lenfant•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2023•Referencias: 2

  • Substitutability and the quest for stability

    Jean-Sébastien Lenfant•ARTICLE•European Journal of the History…•2022

The analysis of the stability of a Walrasian tâtonnement is a central chapter in the history of General Equilibrium Theory. The article aims to provide a historical reconstruction of this research program, starting with Hicks’ Value and Capital (1939). It departs from existing narratives by its focus on the concept of substitutability. It is argued that the concept combined various qualities that made it an element of positive heuristic in the re…

  • Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Utility Measurement (But Were Afraid to Ask)

    Open Access•Jean-Sébastien Lenfant•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 7

A book on the history of utility measurement was sorely lacking but we have it now. Moscati’s achievement in Measuring Utility is undoubtedly both impressive and inspiring. Though it delves into topics partly well-known from historians interested in choice and decision theories, demand theory, utility theory, relationships between economics and psychology, I cannot imagine a single reader who would close the book without having harvested precious…

  • Indifference Curves and the Ordinalist Revolution

    Jean-Sébastien Lenfant•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2012•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 55

The development of ordinalism was fostered by the idea of dispensing with external psychological arguments in utility theory and building the whole theory of the consumer upon indifference curves (and maps). Yet the pioneers of ordinalism, Fisher and Pareto, did not make clear whether indifference curves should be considered as an observational, experimental, or purely theoretical construction (possibly based upon introspection). Indeed, the exac…

  • Arnaud Diemer, Jérôme Lallement et Bertrand Munier (dir.), Maurice Allais et la science économique

    Open Access•Jean-Sébastien Lenfant•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2011•Referencias: 3

In 1988, Maurice Allais (1911-2010) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Yet the contributions of Maurice Allais to economics and economic policy have received only scattered attention (notably in the years following the Nobel award), and this book is the first serious and collective attempt at appraising his contributions to economics. Given that some contributors to this volume were students, disciples or just col…

  • Complementarity and Demand Theory

    Jean-Sébastien Lenfant•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2006•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 46

The history of consumer demand is often presented as the history of the transformation of the simple Marshallian device into a powerful Hicksian representation of demand. Once upon a time, it is said, the Marshallian "law of demand" encountered the principle of ordinalism and was progressively transformed by it into a beautiful theory of demand with all the attributes of modern science. The story may be recounted in many different ways, introduci…
