  • Health services for aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in remote Australia

Open Access•Phillipa J Dossetor, Joseph Freeman et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

In Australia, there is a significant gap between health outcomes in Indigenous and non-Indigenous children, which may relate to inequity in health service provision, particularly in remote areas. The aim was to conduct a scoping review to identify publications in the academic and grey literature and describe 1) Existing health services for Indigenous children in remote Australia and service use, 2) Workforce challenges in remote settings, 3) Char…

  • Severe cyclones and sex‐specific birth outcomes in Queensland, Australia

Open Access•Cynthia Parayiwa, David Harley et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2023

OBJECTIVES: A male is less adaptable to biological stressors than a female fetus with consequent higher morbidity and mortality. Adverse birth outcomes increase and male livebirths decrease after environmental disasters, economic crises, and terrorist events. We hypothesized the ratio of male to female livebirths would decrease in areas affected by severe tropical cyclones (TCs) in Queensland, Australia. Additionally, in male livebirths, there wo…

  • Reasons for Encounters and Comorbidities in Adolescents with Intellectual Disability in General Practice

Open Access•Menghuan Song, Tran Tuan Anh Le et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

Adolescents with intellectual disability have substantial health needs. This retrospective analysis of data from the Ask Study describes reasons for primary care encounters and the prevalence and incidence of chronic physical and mental conditions among a cohort of community-dwelling adolescents with intellectual disability. Participants attended secondary schools in southern Queensland, Australia. Primary care data were extracted from primary ca…

  • An Association between Rainy Days with Clinical Dengue Fever in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Open Access•Kazi Mizanur Rahman, Yushuf Sharker et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Dengue is transmitted throughout the year in Zone-5 of DCC, with seasonal variation in incidence. The number of rainy days per month is significantly associated with dengue incidence in the subsequent month. Our study suggests the initiation of campaigns in DCC for controlling dengue and other Aedes mosquito borne diseases, including Chikunguniya from the month of May each year. BMD rainfall data may be used to determine campaign timing

  • Caregiving and mental health among workers

Open Access•Vasoontara Yiengprugsawan, Liana Leach et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2016

Our findings provide evidence on caregiving and associated risk for psychological distress among working Thais. This adds to the limited existing literature in middle-income countries and highlights the potential pressure among caregivers in balancing work and care while preserving their own mental health

  • Seroprevalence of Antibodies to Ross River and Barmah Forest Viruses

Open Access•Helen Faddy, Helen M Faddy et al.•ARTICLE•EcoHealth•2015

  • Comparison of characteristics and mortality in multidrug resistant (MDR) and non-MDR tuberculosis patients in China

Open Access•Yanni Sun, David Harley et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

MDR-TB was a strong predictor for poor long-term outcome. High quality diagnosis and treatment must be ensured. Greater reimbursement or free treatment may be needed to provide access for the poor and vulnerable populations, and to increase treatment compliance

  • Will Global Climate Change Alter Fundamental Human Immune Reactivity

Open Access•Ashwin Swaminathan, Robyn Lucas et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2014

The human immune system is an interface across which many climate change sensitive exposures can affect health outcomes. Gaining an understanding of the range of potential effects that climate change could have on immune function will be of considerable importance, particularly for child health, but has, as yet, received minimal research attention. We postulate several mechanisms whereby climate change sensitive exposures and conditions will subt…

  • Tuberculosis patients’ knowledge and beliefs about tuberculosis

Open Access•Kerri Viney, Kerri A Viney et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

The majority of the TB patients interviewed did not attribute TB to a bacterial cause. Consulting a traditional healer for health care, including while seeking a diagnosis for TB symptoms, was common and may have delayed diagnosis. People require better information about TB to correct commonly held misperceptions about the disease. Traditional healers could also be engaged with the national TB programme, in order to refer people with signs and sy…

  • Traditional healers and the potential for collaboration with the national tuberculosis programme in Vanuatu

Open Access•Kerri Viney, Penelope Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Traditional healers in Vanuatu treat lung diseases including TB. Many have previously collaborated with the Government funded health care system, and almost all of them indicated a willingness to collaborate with the national TB programme. The engagement of traditional healers in TB management should be considered, using an evidence based and culturally sensitive approach

  • Physical and mental health among caregivers

Open Access•Vasoontara Yiengprugsawan, David Harley et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Adult caregivers in Thailand experienced a consistent adverse physical and mental health burden. A dose-response effect was evident, with odds ratios higher for full-time caregivers than for part-time, and non-caregivers. Our findings should raise awareness of caregivers, their unmet needs, and support required in Thailand and other similar middle-income countries

  • Models and measurement in disability

Open Access•M Palmer, David Harley•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2012

This article reviews the theoretical basis and methods for disability measurement. Different methods arise from different theoretical perspectives. Recent efforts to develop a general international disability measure consistent with the social model of disability aim to produce an internationally comparable measure of disability with which to assess the equalisation of opportunities. Such a measure cannot consistently identify disabled people in …

Vasoontara Yiengprugsawan, Anthony Hogan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Background Socioeconomic and epidemiological effects of hearing impairment have been investigated in rich countries. But in most of the developing world, including middle income countries of Southeast Asia, evidence is still quite scarce. This study examines the association between hearing impairment and health outcomes in Thailand. Methods Data derived from a cohort of 87 134 Open University adults residing throughout Thailand. Multivariate logi…

    David Harley•ARTICLE•Social History of Medicine•1994•Citada por: 5

Michel Foucault argued that the development of morbid anatomy, which he located in late eighteenth-century France, led to a great increase in the power of doctors over patients. The use of autopsy findings to confirm the cause of death and to provide information for systematic pathology had a prior history, however. When introduced into England, in the seventeenth century, the practice was already well established in Europe, notably in connection…

    David Harley•ARTICLE•Social History of Medicine•1990•Citada por: 9

The belief that midwives were commonly persecuted as witches is widespread in the history of witchcraft and the history of medicine. Although the midwife-witch can be found in the writings of some demonologists, influenced by the Malleus Maleficarum, in few of the vast numbers of trials were midwives accused. The practice of midwifery required them to be respectable and trustworthy. Those who dabbled in medicine were occasionally accused but midw…
