  • The Expectations-driven US Current Account

    Open Access•Mathias Hoffmann, Michael U Krause et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2019•Referencias: 35

Since 1991, survey expectations of long-run output growth for the U.S. relative to the rest of the world exhibit a pattern strikingly similar to that of the U.S. current account, and thus also to global imbalances. We show that this finding can to a large extent be rationalized in a two-region stochastic growth model simulated using expected trend growth filtered from observed productivity. In line with the intertemporal approach to the current a…

  • Measuring the Natural Rate of Interest

Thomas Laubach, John T Williams et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2003

The natural rate of interest—the real interest rate consistent with output equaling its natural rate and stable inflation—plays a central role in macroeconomic theory and monetary policy. Estimation of the natural rate of interest, however, has received little attention. We apply the Kalman filter to estimate jointly time-varying natural rates of interest and output and trend growth. We find a close link between the natural rate of interest and t…

  • Measuring the Nairu

Thomas Laubach•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2001

Several specifications of state-space models are used to obtain estimates of the NAIRU for the G7 except Japan, plus Australia, over the past 28 years. A Phillips curve-type regression is shown to deliver estimates that do not mimic low-frequency movements in unemployment rates, even when a drift is included in the specification of the NAIRU. Standard errors around the estimates are extremely large. Using information about the behavior of unemplo…

  • Missing the Mark

Ben S Bernanke, Ben Bernanke et al.•ARTICLE•Foreign Affairs•1999•Citada por: 2

James K. Galbraith takes our book, Inflation Targeting: Lessons from the In ternational Experience, as the jumping-off point for a screed against obsession with price stability (The Inflation Obsession: Flying in the Face of the Facts, January/ February 1999). He does Foreign Affairs readers a disservice by misrepresenting our argument and, as a result, leaves them uninformed about perhaps the most important current debate on the conduct of monet…
