  • The relationship of trait-like compassion with epigenetic aging

    Open Access•Henrik Dobewall, Liisa Keltikangas-Jarvinen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

    An association between higher compassion in 1997 and a less accelerated DNAmPhenoAge, which builds on previous work on phenotypic aging, approached statistical significance in a sex-adjusted model ( n = 1,030; b = -0.34; p = 0.050). Compassion in 1997 predicted less accelerated epigenetic aging over and above the control variables ( n = 843; b = -0.47; p = 0.016). There was no relationship between compassion in 2001 ( n = 1108/910) and any of the…

  • Childhood Psychosocial Cumulative Risks and Carotid Intima-Media Thickness in Adulthood

    Christian Hakulinen, Laura Pulkki-Råback et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2016

OBJECTIVE: Adverse experiences in childhood may influence cardiovascular risk in adulthood. We examined the prospective associations between types of psychosocial adversity and having multiple adversities (e.g., cumulative risk) with carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and its progression among young adults. Higher cumulative risk score in childhood was expected to be associated with higher IMT and its progression. METHODS: Participants were 226…

Open Access•Taina Hintsa, Markus Jokela et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2016•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 26

We examined whether long QT syndrome status moderates the association between stressful life events and depressive symptoms. Participants were 562 ( n = 246 symptomatic) long QT syndrome mutation carriers. Depressive symptoms were measured with a modified version of the Beck's Depression Inventory. There was an interaction between long QT syndrome status and stressful life events on depressive symptoms. In the symptomatic long QT syndrome patient…

    Marko Elovainio, Laura Pulkki-Råback et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2015•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 58

BACKGROUND: Environmental risks in childhood have been shown to predict later depressive symptoms. In this study, we examined whether various environmental risk domains in childhood and adolescence, socioeconomic, psychoemotional, parental lifestyle and life-events, predict depressive symptom trajectories in adulthood individually by domain and as a cumulative risk score across domains. METHODS: Participants were a nationally representative sampl…

Marko Elovainio, Mikko A Hurme et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2012

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the activation of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), an enzyme involved in serotonin production, is associated with depressive symptoms. METHODS: The participants were 544 women and 442 men (aged 24-39 years) from the population-based Young Finns Study who participated in a medical examination in 2001 (including IDO and depression) and 2007 (follow-up assessment for depression). RESULTS: At baseline, IDO was associat…

Open Access•Sari Mullola, Niklas Ravaja et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2012•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 59

Background. Student's temperament plays a significant role in teacher's perception of the student's learning style, educational competence (EC), and teachability. Hence, temperament contributes to student's academic achievement and teacher's subjective ratings of school grades. However, little is known about the effect of gender and teacher's age on this association. Aims. We examined the effect of teacher's and student's gender and teacher's age…

    Open Access•Päivi Merjonen, Laura Pulkki-Råback et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2010•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

The effects of the serotonin receptor 2A (HTR2A) and 1A (HTR1A) polymorphisms and maternal caregiving attitudes on child's later hostile attitudes were examined. The sample consisted of 819 Finnish children and adolescents. Nurturance was reported by the mothers during childhood, while hostile attitudes were reported by the participants in adulthood. Caregiving attitudes predicted hostile attitudes (β = −.069, p = .047), but HTR2A and HTR1A were …

  • Adolescent Leadership and Adulthood Fertility

    Open Access•Markus Jokela, Liisa Keltikangas-Jarvinen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2009

Human motivation for social status may reflect an evolved psychological adaptation that increased individual reproductive success in the evolutionary past. However, the association between status striving and reproduction in contemporary humans is unclear. It may be hypothesized that personality traits related to status achievement increase fertility even if modern indicators of socioeconomic status do not. We examined whether four subcomponents …

Furthermore, interaction between VE and carotid elasticity is examined. Participants were 1,596 young healthy adults from the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns study. Endothelial dysfunction was measured by brachial flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), and carotid elas…

  • Genetic Variants in the DRD2 Gene Moderate the Relationship Between Stressful Life Events and Depressive Symptoms in Adults

Marko Elovainio, Markus Jokela et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2007

OBJECTIVE: To examine the potential moderating role of DRD2 polymorphism (rs1800497) in the association between stressful life events and depressive symptoms among young adults. Although stressful life events, such as divorce, unemployment, and serious illness in the family, are generally associated with negative health outcomes, including depressive symptoms, there are large individual differences in coping with such events. A number of studies …

  • Early Risk Factors, Job Strain, and Atherosclerosis Among Men in Their 30s

Mika Kivimäki, Mirka Hintsanen et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2007•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 20

We examined whether preemployment influences confounded the association between job strain and atherosclerosis. We assessed biological, familial, and socioeconomic risk factors of coronary heart disease at 12 to 18 years of age and job strain and carotid artery intima-media thickness at 33 to 39 years of age for a cohort of 358 men. Adolescent risk factors predicted adult intima-media thickness but had little effect on the dose–response relation …

    Liisa Keltikangas-Jarvinen, Laura Pulkki-Råback et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2006

OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether childhood temperament was able to predict carotid artery intima media thickness (IMT) and/or its risk factors in adulthood 21 years later. METHODS: The subjects were the three youngest age cohorts of the population-based sample of the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns study, i.e., those who were aged 3 to 9 years (n = 708) at the baseline. IMT was assessed by ultrasound, and temperament in terms of negative emo…
