Old and New Renditions of John Company
As is true of studies of other long-lived institutions, most investigations of the English East India Company, 1600-1858, are simultaneously expansive and specific. The Company’s primary records provide rich, local detail, while its temporal breadth and geographic reach allow global generalizations. This behemoth of the early modern world was a trading firm that devolved into an imperial state. The East India Company gave the world innovations in…
Own, Rent, or Rent-Seek
The Royal African Company, the Hudson’s Bay Company, and the East India Company used both owned and hired ships in their seventeenth and eighteenth century trading operations. Why such critical assets were sometimes owned and sometimes rented is explored. Contrary to economic reasoning, ship rentals occurred in shipping markets that were uncompetitive. The use of hired ships was correlated instead to market power in the companies’ selling or outp…
The Colonial Transition and the Decline of the East India Company, C. 1746–1784
This chapter describes the unusual transformation: the Company's loss of its commercial character. It explores the process of organizational change within the East India Company. The transformation of the East India Company underscores the dynamic, adaptive nature of global firms. After 1773, little of the Company's commercial ethos survived in India. The three breaks in the firm's internal management were irreparable. According to veteran direct…

Contract Enforcement in the English East India Company
Long-distance trade depends crucially on the enforcement of long-distance contracts, those in which principals are significantly removed from agents. The problem of contract enforcement in the English East India Company reflected a multi-task principal-agent problem in which servants traded publicly for the company and at the same time conducted their own private trade. Private trade, sustained by the private use of company resources, and dismiss…
Polanyi and the history of capitalism
Mark Blyth's rebuttal to our constructive critique of Polanyi “blithely” takes for granted the accuracy of Polanyi's now‐outdated historiography of capitalism—by means of a loose, overly expansive definition of capitalism that question‐beggingly equates it with modernity. Blyth emphasizes the need to view markets as “socially embedded,” with which we agree—but he appears not to take account of the individual self‐interest that is thus embedded. S…
The reproving of Karl Polanyi
Karl Polanyi's The Great Transformation has had enormous influence since its publication in 1944. In form, this influence has been salutary: Polanyi targets one of the main weaknesses of modern economics. But in substance, Polanyi's influence has been baneful. Mirroring the methodological blindness he criticizes, Polanyi insists on the all-or-nothing existence/ nonexistence of laissez faire-and on its all-or-nothing goodness/badness
