  • Fertility Decline and Educational Progress Among African Women and Children

    Open Access•Tom Vogl•ARTICLE•Demography•2025•Referencias: 45

Theories linking fertility decline to rising education levels among women and children have featured prominently in discussions of African fertility change. Using survey data from 33 countries, this article leverages cross-place and cross-cohort variation to assess these theories’ relevance to the continent's transitions in both realized and desired fertility. • Do Conditional Cash Transfers Improve Economic Outcomes in the Next Generation? Evidence from Mexico

    Open Access•Susan W Parker, Tom Vogl•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2023•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 34

Conditional cash transfer programmes have spread to over 60 countries in the past two decades, but little is known about their long-term effects. Childhood exposure improves women’s outcomes in early adulthood with increases in educational a…

  • Agricultural Fires and Health at Birth

Marcos A Rangel, Tom Vogl et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2019

Fire has long served as a tool in agriculture, but the practice's link with economic activity has made its health consequences difficult to study. Drawing on data from satellite-based fire detection systems, air monitors, and vital records in Brazil, we study how in utero exposure to smoke from sugarcane harvest fires affects health at birth. Exploiting daily changes in fire location and wind direction for identification, we find that late-pregna…

  • Crisis and Human Biology

Prashant Bharadwaj, Tom Vogl•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Economics and…•2015

This chapter reviews the literature on the effects of aggregate crises on human biological outcomes. The crises considered are acute, severe, and unexpected negative events occurring at the population level: recessions, famines, epidemics, natural and environmental disasters, and wars. A review of the literature suggests that the effects of aggregate crises on human biology are pervasive and long-lasting. More broadly, however, the literature hig…

  • Early-Life Health and Adult Circumstance in Developing Countries

Janet Currie, Janet M Currie et al.•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Economics•2013

A growing literature documents the links between long-term outcomes and health in the fetal period, infancy, and early childhood. Much of this literature focuses on rich countries, but researchers are increasingly taking advantage of new sources of data and identification to study the long reach of childhood health in developing countries. Health in early life may be a more significant determinant of adult outcomes in these countries because heal…
