Mexican Immigration And Self-Selection
This chapter uses data from the 2000 Mexican and U.S. Censuses to examine how the educational attainment of Mexican migrants to the United States compares to the educational attainment of those who remain in Mexico. The main finding is that low-skilled Mexicans are more likely than higher-skilled Mexicans to migrate to the United States. Chutes or Ladders? A Longitudinal Analysis of Immigrant Earnings
I use longitudinal earnings data from Social Security records to study the effect of selective emigration on the measured progress of im-migrants to the United States. The immigrant-native earnings gap closes by 10–15 percent during immigrants ’ first 20 years in the United States, or about half as fast as typical estimates from repeated cross sections of the decennial census. Interpretation of Regressions with Multiple Proxies
Multiple proxy variables are typically available for an unobserved explanatory variable in a regression. We provide a procedure by which the coefficient of interest can be estimated from a regression in which all the proxies are included simultaneously.
