Predicting Persistence and Fadeout Across Multi-Site RCTs of an Early Childhood Mathematics Curriculum Intervention
This study examined predictors of persistence and fadeout across multiple cluster randomized controlled trials that evaluated a preschool mathematics curriculum. We used meta-analytic methods to explore how impacts on student mathematics achievement faded between post-test (i.e., endline) and 1-year follow-up. We found that the magnitude of the impact at post-test was a strong predictor of the 1-year follow-up impact. Contrary to popular theory, …
Enhancing Flexible Transfer of Fractions
We codesigned and evaluated a brief intervention combining two fraction games: Fraction Ball (played on a basketball court) and Bottle Caps Bonanza (played on a tabletop shuffleboard). Using participatory design principles, we engaged teachers and students in codesigning playful learning experiences aimed at improving knowledge transfer and adding fractions with unlike denominators. Students were randomly assigned within seven treatment classroom…
Climate change governance by central banks in an era of interlocking crises
In this article, we survey the literature on central bank action on climate change, focusing particularly on how the combined crises of COVID-19, inflation, and Ukraine have affected this action. We argue that the current situation is a critical juncture in which recent crises have created a highly indeterminate situation regarding what central banks might do regarding climate change. To date, some central banks have used these crises as opportun…
The central bank lacuna in green state transformation
The scholarship on green state transformation has harnessed debates on the empirical and ideal transformations of the state in the Anthropocene, but central banks have thus far been elided from analysis. In this article, we draw into focus central banks as pronounced, if ill-considered, features of green state transformations in both theory and practice. Central banks exemplify the intractability, incrementalism and limitations of actually existi…
Facilitating the transition to net zero’ and institutional change in the Bank of England
The role of central banks in perpetuating and tackling the economic patterns associated with climate change has increasingly been subject to academic and political attention. The Bank of England is no exception, having received a new mandate to ‘facilitate the transition to net zero’ in March 2021. This follows the Bank’s utilisation of its monetary tools to repeatedly stabilise the economic status quo since 2008, despite its ecological consequen…
Organising for thin places during the Covid-19 pandemic
This study aims to investigate some of the socio-spatial aspects of thickness and thinness in large Swedish organisations that arose from working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. The questions that this study aimed to answer are 'How do representatives who manage their staff by allowing or restricting WFH in public and private organisations describe how aspects of thickness, in terms of physical proximity and social relations, changed when …
Ecobordering
Based on an analysis of 22 European far-right parties, we identify an emergent discourse in environmental politics, which we conceptualise as ‘ecobordering’. This discourse seeks to blame immigration for national environmental degradation, which draws on colonial and racialised imaginaries of nature in order to rationalise further border restrictions and ‘protect’ the ‘nativist stewardship’ of national nature. As such, ecobordering seeks to obscu…

Social work has experienced unique tensions related to its professional identity and dual purpose of social reform and individualized treatment. Scholars have represented this dual purpose, epitomized by Jane Addams and Mary Richmond, as indicating irreconcilable differences
Re-thinking the Fiscal and Monetary Political Economy of the Green State
Proponents of the Green State repudiate the historical antipathy to the state from many in the green movement and endorse the pragmatic usage of state capacity and legitimacy to realise environmental protection. This article offers a sympathetic critique of the Green State’s fiscal and monetary institutional design in order to refine the concept further. It will investigate an under-theorised contradiction in the political economy of the Green St…
The Role of the Mental Health Social Worker
The contribution of mental health social work (MHSW) to multidisciplinary care delivery has been subject to political pressures for change since the introduction in the UK of the National Service Framework for Mental Health in 1999 and subsequent New Ways of Working (NWW) initiative in 2003. Culminating in the new 2007 Mental Health Act for England and Wales, Approved Social Workers have been replaced by Approved Mental Health Practitioners (AMHP…
Evaluating Equalities
Equalities work in local authorities has traditionally been impaired by 'fadism'. Major events have led to flurries of activity, but the real concern is whether this activity is sustainable once the initial impetus dies away. Do real changes take place in the way services are provided to (or in the types of service provided for) Britain's Black and minority ethnic communities or is it a merely a case of 'window dressing'. This article looks at th…
