Tracing the origins
First lead isotope analyses of early medieval lead ingots and ornaments from Great Moravian sites. • Provenance data indicate links with ore deposits of Upper Silesia and the Kraków Upland in southern Poland. • Data support the exploitation of these ore districts in the late 9th–10th c. • Lead ingot masses correspond to a Carolingian weight system of 408 g to the pound. • Results demonstrate long-distance metal exchange networks within the Great …
Revisiting early medieval chronologies
This article examines the chronology of Great Moravian hillfort construction using radiocarbon data from the Bojná agglomeration, one of the key centres of early medieval settlement in the Middle Danube Basin. Based on an analysis of 79 radiocarbon dates from five sites, a refined chronological model is proposed for the agglomeration’s development in the 6th–10th centuries. The findings challenge the widely accepted view that hillfort constructio…

Ein jungkaiserzeitlicher Goldanhänger aus Ražňany, Ostslowakei
The golden pendant was accidentally found in the northern part of a large settlement area from the 3rd-4th century in the basin of the river Torysa, eastern Slovakia. It belongs to the group of Late Roman lunula/pretzel-shaped pendants decorated with granulation and filigree. The importance of this site is underlined by the fact that in the past a wellknown princely grave (Ostrovany, formerly Ostropataka) was found nearby. Fragments of Roman-type…

Al‐Khidr site on Failaka Island in the Bronze Age
The objective of this article is to evaluate the results of the excavation at the site of Al‐Khidr on Failaka Island that was probably a port or a fishermen’s settlement in the past. A very large number of stone architectural remains and artifacts have been discovered there. Al‐Khidr is a typical Dilmun culture site and the settlement was probably contemporary with the known sites F3 and F6 located on the south‐west coast of the island. Based on …
Nové včasnostredoveké nálezy z Turca
The surveys of the eastern foothills of the Mal Fatra Mountains (northern Slovakia) have brought new information about the settlement of the Turiec region. In the hillfort with double rampart lines on a rocky hill not far from Ondraov, district Turianske Teplice, isolated finds from the Middle La Tne period and intensive early medieval settlement were found. This fortification and nearby newly discovered sites in Abramov-Polerieka and Zniev signi…

Early Roman Period Burials of Púchov Culture
The study presents and analyses materials from two hillforts located in North-Western Slovakia, where the Early Roman Age skeletal graves were discovered. At that time, Pchov culture hillforts disappeared abruptly. Significant changes in ethnical composition as well as in power structure led to the modification of settlement structure in the Western Carpathians. Numerous pieces of weaponry, inventories and hoards show that both hillforts analysed…
Influence of the Przeworsk culture in the Púchov culture milieu
The material content of the Pchov culture reflects complicated cultural relations in the Carpathian area. In the Early Roman Period, southern regions of the Pchov culture inclined towards Suebian cultural environment, whereas northern areas to the Przeworsk culture. Contacts between regions located north and south of the Carpathians, in the mountainous area of northern Slovakia, have been evident from the Late La Tne Period. They have been the mo…

The North Carpathians at the beginning of the Migration Period
The problem of identification of the earliest Slavic settlement in central Europe drew researchers' attention to the archaeological finds of the Late Roman and Migration periods. The simple hand-made pottery of this period in the northern Danube region showed a certain formal resemblance to the vessels of Early Slavic cultures, which provoked the idea of a direct time connection between the first wave of the Slav expansion from the east and the h…
