  • Group rehabilitation in Parkinson's disease

Jaana Ruotsalainen, Emily Carlson et al.•ARTICLE•Nordisk Tidsskrift for Musikkterapi•2025•Referencias: 51

Introduction: Neurological patients, such as those with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) often have multiple treatment needs beyond motor rehabilitation. The integration of multiple therapy modalities allows a single therapist to address physical, social and emotional needs. Method: The current study comprises a case example of an integrated approach in the form of a small group therapy intervention integrating music and physiotherapy methods. Five men (…

  • Musical interaction in music therapy for depression treatment

Open Access•M Hartmann, Anastasios Mavrolampados et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Music•2023

Music therapy is efficacious for the treatment of depression. Compared to other psychotherapeutic forms, it allows for the emergence of various modes of mutual interaction, thus enabling multiple channels for emotional expression and fostering therapeutic alliance. Although musical interaction patterns between client and therapist have been regarded as predictors of therapeutic outcome in depression, this has not yet been systematically investiga…

  • Rhythmic exercises as tools for rehabilitation following cerebellar stroke

Open Access•Jaana Ruotsalainen, Emily Carlson et al.•ARTICLE•Nordisk Tidsskrift for Musikkterapi•2022•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 53

Introduction: This article explores the use of music and multisensory stimuli in the construction of compensatory neural networks for motoric functioning in a patient recovering from cerebellar strokes (CS). This study aimed to address the real-world clinical concern of patients having a passive role in therapy, by arousing the client’s interest and self-motivation in rehabilitation. Method: The article presents a case study of a CS survivor, usi…

  • Effects of maternal singing during kangaroo care on maternal anxiety, wellbeing, and mother-infant relationship after preterm birth

Open Access•Kaisamari Kostilainen, Kaija Mikkola et al.•ARTICLE•Nordisk Tidsskrift for Musikkterapi•2021•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 54

Introduction Preterm birth may disturb the typical development of the mother-infant relationship, when physical separation and emotional distress in the neonatal intensive care unit may increase maternal anxiety and create challenges for early interaction. This cluster-randomized controlled trial examined the effects of maternal singing during kangaroo care on mothers' anxiety, wellbeing, and the early mother-infant relationship after preterm bir…

Although music is the fundamental element of music therapy, music analysis methods are a particularly under-researched area. This study investigates how and when psychodynamically orientated music therapists employ the analysis of musical material in both clinical work and research. Constructivist grounded theory was employed in the collection and analysis of the data. Eight participants, all highly experienced in psychodynamic music therapy, wer…

  • Favouring emotional processing in improvisational music therapy through resonance frequency breathing

Olivier Brabant, Safa Solati et al.•ARTICLE•Nordisk Tidsskrift for Musikkterapi•2017•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 50

Resonance frequency breathing (RFB) is a form of slow breathing at around six breaths/min, whose immediate effects are to substantially increase heart rate variability (HRV) and to reduce stress levels. Since RFB has already been successfully used on its own to treat various emotional disorders, we wanted to evaluate its effect on emotional processing when used as a preparatory intervention in improvisational music therapy. To do so, we performed…

Background: Microanalysis has grown from 2007 to 2015; first steps of automatization are done and first multi-cases-microanalyses are done. Objective: Workshop will present the state of the art. Afterwards, three groups will be focused in three microanalysis methods. Finally, perspectives will be discussed. Methods: Methods are a phenomenological-inspired approach, computational Music Therapy Toolbox (MTTB) and Improvisation-Assessment-Profile Auto…

  • The role of music in adolescents' mood regulation

    Open Access•Suvi Saarikallio, Jaakko Erkkilä•ARTICLE•Psychology of Music•2007

The aim of this study was the exploration and theoretical clarification of the role of music in adolescents' mood regulation. The phenomenon was approached through an inductive theory construction. The data were gathered from eight adolescents by means of group interviews and follow-up forms, and were then analysed using constructive grounded theory methods. The analysis resulted in a theoretical model, which describes mood regulation by music as…

  • Exploring Relationships between Level of Mental Retardation and Features of Music Therapy Improvisations

Geoff Luck, Kari Riikkilä et al.•ARTICLE•Nordisk Tidsskrift for Musikkterapi•2006•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 31

The present study sought to identify relationships between musical features of music therapy improvisations and clients' level of mental retardation, using a computationally-based method of analysis. 216 improvisations, contributed by 50 clients, were collected in MIDI format. Clients were divided into four groups according to their level of diagnosed mental retardation: 1 = none, 2 = mild, 3 = moderate, 4 = severe or profound. 43 client-related …
