  • Photovoice for leveraging traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine amongst black adults to improve sleep health and overall health

Open Access•Rhoda Moise, Maurice J Chery et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Introduction: Average adults are recommended to have 7-8 h of sleep. However insufficient sleep (IS defined as <7 h/nightly) is associated with increased risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine (TCIM), a burgeoning area of research and practice, leverages both modern and traditional approaches to improve health. Despite TCIM's recogniti…

  • Ethical and Policy Implications of Racial and Ethnic Healthcare Disparities in Sleep Health

  • Development and Evaluation of the Clinical Trial HEalth Knowledge and Beliefs Scale (CHEKS)

Open Access•Alicia Chung, Tiffany Donley et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Patient health literacy is vital to clinical trial engagement. Knowledge and beliefs about clinical trials may contribute to patient literacy of clinical trials, influencing engagement, enrollment and retention. We developed and assessed a survey that measures clinical trial health knowledge and beliefs, known as the Clinical trial HEalth Knowledge and belief Scale (CHEKS). The 31 survey items in CHEKS represent knowledge and beliefs about clinic…

  • Sleep, Classroom Behavior, and Achievement Among Children of Color in Historically Disinvested Neighborhoods

Open Access•Alexandra Ursache, Rebecca Robbins et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2021

Children of color are more likely to have poor sleep health than White children, placing them at risk for behavioral problems in the classroom and lower academic performance. Few studies, however, have utilized standardized measures of both classroom behavior and achievement. This study examined whether children’s sleep (parent and teacher report) in first grade concurrently related to independent observations of classroom behavior and longitudin…

  • Building a Pipeline to Increase Academic Workforce Diversity to Achieve Health Equity

    Open Access•Girardin Jean-Louis, Girardin Jean‐Louis•ARTICLE•Health Equity•2021

The disproportionately low number of under-represented minority (URM) faculty pursuing research careers is attributed partly to an inadequate pool of well-trained URM scientists. This is compounded by lower rates of successful competition for NIH funding by URM scientists. Evidence shows black scientists are 13% less likely to receive NIH funding relative to white scientists. Increasing the number of well-trained URM scientists is a highly signif…

  • The Moderating Effect of Physical Activity on the Relationship between Sleep and Emotional Distress and the Difference between Blacks and Whites

Open Access•Jesse Moore, Shannique Richards et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

    (1) Background: Unhealthy sleep durations (short and long sleep) are associated with emotional distress (ED). Minority populations, specifically Blacks, are more burdened with unhealthy sleep durations and ED. The ameliorative effect of physical activity (PA) on ED and sleep duration may provide insight into how to reduce the burden among Blacks and other minorities. However, it is unclear whether PA attenuates the relationship between sleep and …

  • Assessment of Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Hospitalization and Mortality in Patients With Covid-19 in New York City

Open Access•Gbenga Ogedegbe, Joseph Ravenell et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Network Open•2020

Importance: Black and Hispanic populations have higher rates of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) hospitalization and mortality than White populations but lower in-hospital case-fatality rates. The extent to which neighborhood characteristics and comorbidity explain these disparities is unclear. Outcomes in Asian American populations have not been explored. Objective: To compare COVID-19 outcomes based on race and ethnicity and assess the assoc…

  • PRIDE Peer Mentor Development Program

Natasha Williams, Joseph Ravenell et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2020

The PMDP may be a model for higher education and academic medicine programs committed to mentoring and retaining racially/ethnically diverse faculty and ultimately contributing to reducing entrenched health disparities between majority and minority populations

  • Sleep Duration and Health Care Expenditures in the United States

    Foram S Jasani, Foram Jasani et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2020•Referencias: 23

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the average incremental health care expenditures associated with habitual long and short duration of sleep as compared with healthy/average sleep duration. DATA SOURCE: Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data (2012; N=6476) linked to the 2010-2011 National Health Interview Survey. STUDY DESIGN: Annual differences in health care expenditures are estimated for habitual long and short duration sleepers as compared with average d…

  • Sleep Disorders and Symptoms in Blacks with Metabolic Syndrome

    Natasha Williams, Natasha J Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2018

Blacks with MetS reported insomnia symptoms and insomnia disorder, use of sleep aids, feeling sleepy during the day, and inadequate sleep durations. The presence of these sleep characteristics suggests that patients with MetS should be referred for further sleep assessment

  • Development and Evaluation of Two Abbreviated Questionnaires for Mentoring and Research Self-Efficacy

    Donna B Jeffe, Treva Rice et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2017

The RMMRI-9 and CRAI-19 retained the excellent psychometric properties of the longer measures. Findings support use of the shortened measures in future evaluations of PRIDE

  • A Perspective on Promoting Diversity in the Biomedical Research Workforce

    Josephine Boyington, Josephine E A Boyington et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2016

Aspiring junior investigators from groups underrepresented in the biomedical sciences face various challenges as they pursue research independence. However, the biomedical research enterprise needs their participation to effectively address critical research issues such as health disparities and health inequities. In this article, we share a research education and mentoring initiative that seeks to address this challenge: Programs to Increase Div…

Adults living in low-income housing completed a survey consisting of measures of neighborhood stigma, sleep quality, and sleep duration. Neighborhood stigma and sleep were self-reporte…

  • Differential increase in prevalence estimates of inadequate sleep among black and white Americans

    Open Access•Girardin Jean-Louis, Girardin Jean‐Louis et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

Blacks and whites are characteristically different regarding the prevalence of inadequate sleep over the years. Temporal changes in estimates of inadequate sleep seem dependent upon individuals' race/ethnicity

  • Associations between inadequate sleep and obesity in the US adult population

    Open Access•Girardin Jean-Louis, Girardin Jean‐Louis et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Our findings support the hypothesis that prevalence of very short and short sleep has gradually increased over the last 32 years. Inadequate sleep was associated with overweight and obesity for each available year
