Femininity, Bulimia, and Distress in College Women
This study investigated differences in the scores on perceived Distress and Bulimia among college women with varying scores on the Behavioral Self-report of Femininity. Distress was assessed using The Psychological Distress Inventory and Bulimia was measured using the Bulimia Cognitive Distortions Scale. Women who reported low numbers of stereotypic feminine behaviors scored lower on the Bulimia Cognitive Distortions Scale than women reporting mo…
Femininity, Depression and Stress in College Women
This study evaluated the relationships among femininity, depression, and stress. One hundred eighty-six college females were given the Beck Depression Inventory, the Behavioral Self-report of Femininity and the Psychological Distress Inventory. Positive correlations were found between femininity and depression. Lower femininity and lower depression scores tended to be associated with reports of high stress. Further work is needed to clarify the r…
Friendships, Femininity, and Reaction to Affective Arousal
This study examined relations between college women's scores on femininity and their same-sex friendships and how these women's perceptions were influenced by induction of success or failure. 200 undergraduate women described themselves and their best friends on the dominance and submissiveness scales of the Interpersonal Adjective Scales and also completed the Behavioral Self-report of Femininity and a biographical information sheet. Mean rating…
Predictor-Criterion Relationships as a Function of Item Compatibility
This study examined which of two measures of femininity would better predict women's responses to an adjective checklist. It was confirmed for a sample of 150 undergraduate women that a femininity scale which focuses on “internal” states was superior to one which concentrates on external behavior in predicting “internal” criteria. What role item overlap plays has yet to be determined
Another Femininity Scale
The construction and validation of the Behavioral Self-report of Femininity is described. An initial sample of 32 male and 63 female undergraduates indicated the frequency of engaging in 91 "feminine" behaviors. The 59 items which showed good internal consistency as well as differentiation between genders were retained. Test-retest reliability over a 2-wk. period was .90. Convergent and discriminant validities were examined by comparing our resul…
A Behavioral Self-Report of Masculinity
The authors describe the construction and validation of the Behavioral Self-report of Masculinity as an alternative to existing attitudinal measures which have been criticized for poorly predicting subsequent behaviors. A pool of 76 behavioral items was administered to 102 undergraduates to judge whether overt behaviors could significantly differentiate across gender. Items were also examined for discrimination between typical college males and c…
Teachers' Implicit “Theories” of Children's Intelligence
Information about teachers' implicit notions of children's intelligence was obtained by having 50 student-teachers and 79 teachers with 1 to 4 years of experience rate 150 descriptors on applicability to an hypothetical child described as above average, average, or below average in intellectual functioning. Each teacher-subject was classified by dogmatism score and by years of teaching experience. A factor analysis disclosed that Academic Skills …
Implicit Theories or Halo Effect? Conceptions about Children's Intelligence
Information about implicit conceptions of children's intelligence was obtained by having undergraduates, aged 20 yr. or older, rate behavioral descriptions for hypothetical children classified as having “Above Average,” “Average,” and “Below Average” intelligence. While sex of subject and sex of child rated did not significantly influence the ratings, a main effect for level of intelligence was obtained, that is, ratings of behaviors rationally c…
An Attempt to Obtain Configural Correlates for the California Psychological Inventory
The study was designed to obtain empirical correlates of previously defined California Psychological Inventory profiles. Undergraduate females took the inventory and a biographical questionnaire. Those 54 whose profiles could be classified into groups of 10 or more were each rated by two female friends using Wiggins' Interpersonal Adjective Scales. Type 1 (“anti-social”) profiles were significantly associated with having been in trouble with the …
Is the MMPI an Appropriate Assessment Device for Blacks
This article asked whether the MMPI, the inventory most frequently used to assess psychopathology and per sonality, should continue to be employed to evaluate Blacks, given the fact that it was normed exclusively on Whites. Blacks, especially normal individuals, typically obtain significantly higher scores than Whites on scales measuring nonconformity, alienation, and impulsivity. Blacks also differ from Whites in their responses to a large porti…

Marital Status, Readmission to Hospital, and lntrapersonal and Interpersonal Perceptions of Alcoholics
This study was designed to determine the relationship between personal and interpersonal perceptions, marital status and readmission or nonreadmission to the hospital. Interpersonal Check List (icl) data, Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (mmpi), and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale vocabularies were obtained from 40 married alcoholics (2 women) and 40 unmarried alcoholics (9 women); 23 of the married group had been married more than o…
Relations Between Self and Parental Perceptions of Unwed Mothers and Obstetric Complications
The study was designed to determine whether there are differences in self-concepts, descriptions of parents, or perceived similarity with parents prior to or after delivery between women with obstetric complications and those with uneventful parturitions. Patients were classified as abnormal if there were disorders during gestation, developmental abnormalities in the neonate, or delivery irregularities. The Interpersonal Check List was administer…

Relations between Maternal Anxiety and Obstetric Complications
This study was designed to determine whether obstetrical factors such as complications and labor time are related to maternal anxiety. The IPAT Anxiety Scale and other tests were administered at the beginning of the third trimester. Patients were classified as normal or abnormal by means of pregnancy, deliveryroom, and postpartum records. These groups were comparable with regard to age, intelligence, total pregnancies, and first pregnancies. The …
