Essential Diversity
This article offers a critical engagement with Perry Schmidt-Leukel’s The Celestial Web , a comparative study of Buddhism and Christianity that challenges essentialist views of religious traditions. The book’s approach, grounded in Schmidt-Leukel’s fractal theory of religious diversity, posits that both interreligious and intrareligious pluralism follow similar structural patterns. While acknowledging the theological orientation of the work, the …
The Utility of Asceticism
This article explores asceticism as a comparative category in the study of religion and culture. It argues that in order to study the broad range of ascetic beliefs and practices across cultures effectively, scholars must reflect conscientiously on how they use the term asceticism. After making some genealogical observations, the article discusses three different types of definitions (substantive, functional, and discursive) and then shows, by an…
Relevance in Three Dimensions
This article argues that three dimensions of relevance can be identified for the academic study of religion as it is taught at the university: (1) Foundations; (2) General Education; and (3) Application. The analytical distinction of these dimensions also reveals that they are inextricably linked and co‐dependent. This model may help to sort out the tasks and opportunities of a secular, comparative study of religion in academia and society. Impor…

Comparison Considered
The present issue’s review symposium on comparison comprises six thoughtful and stimulating essays in which the authors, in conversation with Bruce Lincoln’s Apples and Oranges (2018) and my Considering Comparison (2019), reflect on the comparative method and on how it relates to their work. Their reflections are explorative, productive, thought-provoking, and they also criticize and challenge aspects of our books in constructive ways, each from …
Considering Comparison
This book seeks to rehabilitate the comparative method in the study of religion by highlighting its fundamental role for the academic mission of religious studies and by proposing both a responsible theoretical approach and a methodological framework. Analyzing the ways in which comparison is used in the study of religion, the book identifies the primary goals of this method and argues that it is constitutive for religious studies as an academic …
Freedom for the Tertium
Introduction
Much ink has been spilled over the significance, the risks and benefits, and even the very possibility of comparison in the study of religion, but few scholars have reflected on how comparison actually works
Elements of a Comparative Methodology in the Study of Religion
While comparison has been the subject of much theoretical debate in the study of religion, it has rarely been discussed in methodological terms. A large number of comparative studies have been produced in the course of the discipline's history, but the question of how comparison works as a method has rarely been addressed. This essay proposes, in the form of an outline, a methodological frame of comparison that addresses both the general configur…

Negative Campaigning
This paper takes a close look at the ways Brahmins are portrayed in one sutta of the Pali canon that explains the ‘five ancient principles of Brahmins that today are seen in dogs, but not in Brahmins’. The paper analyses the method of comparing Brahmins with dogs and discusses the rhetorical purpose of this comparison by juxtaposing the respective statements with data from Brahmanical law texts. In the course of this analysis three rhetorical tec…

Asceticism and its Critics
Scholars of religion have always been fascinated by asceticism. Some have even regarded this radical way of life the withdrawal from the world, combined with practices that seriously affect basic bodily needs, up to extreme forms of self-mortification as the ultimate form of a true religious quest. This view is rooted in hagiographic descriptions of prominent ascetics and in other literary accounts that praise the ascetic life-style. Scholars hav…
