Did mathematics achievement gaps for students with disabilities widen after the introduction of the Common Core and its aligned assessments
This study addresses the important yet underexplored question of whether the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics, first introduced in the United States in 2009 and which emphasize critical thinking and problem‐solving, as well as the computer‐based assessments aligned with the Common Core, have facilitated or hindered learning for students with disabilities. By analysing administrative data from a large county in California, we track mathe…
Perceptions of mental health screening and referral to treatment in National Dental‐Practice Based Research Network practices
Participants noted the importance of implementing systematic procedures for mental health screening and referral to services into dental practices, while also recognizing the potential barriers for integrating such processes. They also expressed a desire for quality training and resources that can support better care for patients with mental health concerns

The prospects & challenges of local foods production in rural Java, Indonesia
The importance of home gardens as the traditional source of local foods has been abandoned due to the new lifestyle of the young generation in Indonesia. The paper aims at examining the prospects and challenges of promoting local food as a complement to rice as staple food and to improve food security simultaneously. The paper is written on the basis of reviews of reports and focused group discussions with relevant stakeholders as well as reports…
Understanding and assessing uncertainty of observational climate datasets for model evaluation using ensembles
In climate science, observational gridded climate datasets that are based on in situ measurements serve as evidence for scientific claims and they are used to both calibrate and evaluate models. However, datasets only represent selected aspects of the real world, so when they are used for a specific purpose they can be a source of uncertainty. Here, we present a framework for understanding this uncertainty of observational datasets which distingu…

We believe that the forthright sharing of information among foundations and nonprofits builds a knowledge base that strengthens their ability to effectively address critical social issues. Understanding the Syria Babel
The war in Syria, and its ongoing analysis, is burdened by a variety of seemingly irreconcilable political motivations, actions, ideologies, religious affiliations, and power dynamics of multiple state and nonstate actors. In this context, various moral perspectives appear to come into direct conflict, underpinning the actions of the actors involved and to varying degrees influencing their competing political interests. Is there a coherent dialog…

Technological change in Capitalism
Most social theorists agree with Adam Smith’s assertion that ‘consumption is the sole end and purpose of all production’, with technology serving as a means to that end. Marx acknowledged the great benefits that capitalism’s unprecedented technological dynamism has brought to humanity. For Marx, however, the ‘end and purpose ’ of capitalist production is the accumulation of surplus value. From this perspective technology in capitalism is, first a…
Governing the American State
As the Civil War drew to a close, Senator Charles Sumner's attempt to “crush out the last lingering relics of the States’ Rights dogma” with the Raritan Railroad Bill was opposed by President Abraham Lincoln who saw it as an effort to “change this government from its original form, and [make] it a strong centralized power” (Burlingame 2000, 171). Former President James Madison had earlier opposed Senator Daniel Webster's efforts to define the Ame…

Methods for Assessing and Calibrating Response Scales Across Countries and Languages
Scientific research rests on the reliable and consistent measurement of phenomenon. In cross-national or cross-cultural survey research between countries or social groups that speak different languages, the goal of replicative measurement is greatly complicated by the necessity of designing and administering questionnaires in two or more languages. This chapter examines how response categories influence the reported distribution of results. It th…

Weak law week conversation
In Law Week 1992, a NSW Court ruled that the old Education Department building known as the Bridge Street HQ, was not available for claim by local Aborigines. Legislation gives the Aborigines the right to press land claims on unoccupied crown land, and the Greiner Government had moved the Department from the building, planning to convert it to a casino. The court's ruling was based on the fact that the Government had left a skeleton staff there f…

Conjuring Culture
This book provides a sophisticated new interdisciplinary interpretation of the formulation and evolution of African American religion and culture. Theophus Smith argues for the central importance of “conjure”—a magical means of transforming reality—in black spirituality and culture. Smith shows that the Bible, the sacred text of Western civilization, has in fact functioned as a magical formulary for African Americans. Going back to slave religion…

Radiographic and visual assessment of alveolar pathology of first molars in dry skulls
There are many reports in the literature relating to the dental pathology of ancient peoples. In most instances only visual observations of alveolar lesions have been made, precluding assessment of covert dental lesions. The present paper was undertaken to compare the incidence of alveolar dental lesions determined by both visual and radiographic methods in a group of Australian aboriginal skulls. First molars of the right side were used for the …

Linear growth of children in Papua New Guinea in relation to dietary, environmental and genetic factors
Linear growth rates in rural Papua New Guinea vary widely by environmental zone. The 1982/83 National Nutrition Survey was a stratified cluster sample survey including questions on diet and anthropometry of children under five years of age. Regression analyses including 25,022 children from this survey show that variation in stature by altitude and precipitation level can largely be accounted for by differences in the fat and protein contents of …
