Grassroots scaling up
My theoretical aim in this article is to focus on an examination of processual enactments of scale in light of the technological affordances that are currently at the disposal of a significant majority of humans. I offer the terms algorithmic scales and algorithmic scalar affordances to describe one activist's engagement of practical theories of scale-her 'algorithmic imagination' (Bucher 2017)-which led her to design her audience in ways intende…
I Am Here and I Matter”
In this article I operationalize the term “virtue signaling”, a term generally pejoratively used towards people’s assertions of values on social media platforms, as “moral-political stancetaking”, an activity that is actually quite common on- and offline and that works to exert peer pressure toward onlookers and addressees so that they will adopt certain values. Using analytical frameworks of small stories and stance, I examine a narrative sequen…
LadiesWeGotYou
In this article I focus on how leaders of a progressive activist group in Houston, Texas interacted with each other on Facebook, collaboratively formulating a group identity exemplified through a set of stances that I callmoral political stances. Through microlevel examination of two postcomment sequences, I examine exactly how these participants wrote themselves into being as a singular and unified group of politically and morally motivated acto…
Nation and Nationalism
Conceptualizations of the nation in the current era are intricately intertwined with the formation of modern states. This modern era is furthermore defined by the alignment of nations and states with language, thus the one language/one land/one nation triumvirate that has dominated nation‐state formation in modern times. In this entry I discuss the historical formation of modern nations and their states, and the role that language plays in both. …
Conversational Maxims and Conversational Implicature
Grice's theory of the “cooperative principle” (CP) includes the two key concepts of conversational implicature and conversational maxims. Implicature can simply be understood as what is unsaid but still meant in a given utterance. The four maxims that Grice delineates are the rules that must be obeyed in a conversation in order for communication to succeed. When speakers obey the CP in an interaction, they cannot feasibly state everything that th…
Public–Private (Sphere)
Public–private (sphere) is a complementary pair of concepts intended to explore a dichotomy of one space (the public) seen as open to a certain group, and another group/individual considered closed off to some or all in the former category. The latter is seen as closer to the self, while the former is seen as existing further from the self. The notion of public sphere is generally associated with negotiations between bourgeois classes and the sta…
Statehood, Scale and Hierarchy
Against the background of language and nation formation in Indonesia, this book demonstrates how language planning is inseparable from the broader actions of the state, and how postcolonial nationalism and globalization have had profound implications for language use and state actions to control it. Using language planners’ texts, national and regional policy statements and the discussions of university English majors, it explores the borders of …
Theorizing mobility in semiotic landscapes
This study theorizes connections between semiotic resources and mobility in public displays of language with reference to data from Brownsville, Texas and Betultujuh, Central Java. From an ethnographic perspective, the paper explores the relation of public signage to the mobility of human beings and the mobility of texts in space and time. The semiotic landscape of Brownsville reflects a stratified sociolinguistic space shaped by a history of con…
The porous borders of language and nation
This analysis of language use and legislation in globalization highlights challenges to and crossings of the borders of Indonesian nationalist ideologies and local language ecologies. Through the specific workings of language and languaging in situ , here explored through three brief examples of language use and ideologies in Central Java, I analyze university English majors’ discussions of the local meaningfulness of English. The analysis demons…
Is English also the place where I belong?’
This article employs the term ‘communicative repertoire’ in order to highlight that when one learns any new ‘language’, one introduces new communicative resources into a unified communicative repertoire. As repertoires represent such singular ‘grammars’ in individuals’ minds, learned communicative resources can be deployed across all of the speaker's ‘languages’. In the single case study presented in this article, one individual from a medium-siz…
Love" the Local, "Use" the National, "Study" the Foreign
Indonesian state development policies have shaped definitions of language, meanings conveyed through language, and access to language forms through deliberate policy actions that pervade public, and increasingly, private life. Modern language ideologies that are part and parcel of national development have informed these policies and informed educated youths' understandings and rationalizations of their linguistic competencies. In this paperIexpl…
