  • The Monkey as a Psychological Subject

    Open Access•Harry F Harlow•ARTICLE•Integrative Psychological and…•2008

Many species in long-term captivity have tried to kill time by playing friendly games with their warders. In the end, only rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) could tolerate the tedious hide-and-seek games that their human jailers prefer to play. In this article, written many years before the Stockholm syndrome was first described, the author relates how it was eventually discovered which species is most willing to contribute to the development of a …

  • Behavioral Effects of Prolonged Partial Social Isolation in the Rhesus Monkey

    Open Access•Stephen J Suomi, Harry F Harlow et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1971

48 rhesus monkeys, reared from birth in partial social isolation and ranging in age from 2 mo. to 131⁄2 yr., and 12 feral-born monkeys, comparable in age to the 12 oldest partial isolates, were each scored for home-cage behavior. The survey showed that most partial isolates' behavioral levels declined with increasing age, males exhibiting more disturbance activity, more threats, and less grooming than females. The oldest partial isolates showed l…

8 isolate monkeys were compared in a follow-up study to 8 sophisticated controls in brief cross-sectional pairings with 12 stimulus strangers: 4 adults, 4 age-mates, and 4 juveniles. The isolates were characterized by infantile disturbance, less environmental orality, more fear, more aggression, less sex, less play, and bizarre ritualistic movements. 12-mo. isolates were fearful and nonaggressive but threatened many attacks. 6-mo. isolates were f…

Much as been written about Harry Harlow’s controversial use of rhesus macaques as experimental subjects in his research on mother-infant bonds. On August 31, 1958, Harlow presented the results of his work in his presidential address at the Sixty-sixth Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association in Washington, D. C.
