Citywide park renovations and changes in perceived stress
In one of the first and largest studies on park quality improvement and mental health, park renovation near one's home was associated with decreased perceived stress among divorced/separated/widowed adults and middle-aged frequent park users. Frequent users of renovated parks experienced a larger drop in perceived stress than infrequent users, suggesting that high-quality parks may be an important pre-condition to the benefits of frequent park us…

Associations of Park Use with Physical Activity in Renovated Parks Serving Low-Income Communities in New York City
A survey of Covid-19 vaccine acceptance across 23 countries in 2022
The association of park use and park perception with quality of life using structural equation modeling
Introduction The literature is limited on the impact of neighborhood parks on quality of life (QoL) and the mechanism linking them. Methods In this paper, we applied the structural equation model to data from a cross-sectional sample of 650 participants in low-income communities of New York City, we examined the associations of neighborhood park use vs. park perception and QoL, and whether these associations were mediated through self-reported pe…
Perceived neighborhood environment walkability and health-related quality of life among predominantly Black and Latino adults in New York City
Among NYC residents living in minoritized neighborhoods, mitigating negative aspects of the neighborhood environment may be more crucial than adding positive features in terms of HR-QoL. Our study points to the need to investigate further the role of the built environment in urban, minoritized communities
Revisiting Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy around the world using data from 23 countries in 2021
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact daily life, including health system operations, despite the availability of vaccines that are effective in greatly reducing the risks of death and severe disease. Misperceptions of COVID-19 vaccine safety, efficacy, risks, and mistrust in institutions responsible for vaccination campaigns have been reported as factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy. This study investigated COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy gl…
A Multidimensional Profile of Adolescent Agency in Uttar Pradesh, India, and Implications for Reproductive Choice
The Role of the Physical and Social Environment in Observed and Self-Reported Park Use in Low-Income Neighborhoods in New York City
Physical and social environments of parks and neighborhoods influence park use, but the extent of their relative influence remains unclear. This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between the physical and social environment of parks and both observed and self-reported park use in low-income neighborhoods in New York City. We conducted community- ( n = 54 parks) and individual-level ( n = 904 residents) analyses. At the community leve…
The development of adolescent agency and implications for reproductive choice among girls in Zambia
Results show agency is dynamic but less mutable with increasing age. Early adolescent strategies which address inequitable gender norms and limit early marriage, may guard against losses to agency which contribute to unwanted fertility outcomes
Outcomes of the Parent Advocacy Initiative in child safety conferences
Probable Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Lower Respiratory Symptoms Among Rescue/Recovery Workers and Community Members After the 9/11 World Trade Center Attacks—A Longitudinal Mediation Analysis
OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and lower respiratory symptoms (LRS) often coexist among survivors of the September 11, 2001 (9/11) World Trade Center (WTC) attacks. Research in police and nontraditional responders suggests that PTSD mediates the relationship between 9/11 physical exposures and LRS, but not vice versa. We replicated these findings in WTC rescue/recovery workers (R/R workers), extended them to exposed community mem…

Dietary Behavior and Urinary Gallic Acid Concentrations in Older Minority Residents of East Harlem, New York City
Implementation Protocol To Increase Problematic Alcohol Use Screening and Brief Intervention in Brazil’s National Health System
A protocol for measuring the impact of a smoke-free housing policy on indoor tobacco smoke exposure
The baseline survey was completed by 559 NYCHA residents and 471 comparison building residents (response rates, 35, and 32%, respectively). Smoking prevalence was comparable between study arms (15.7% among NYCHA residents and 15.2% among comparison residents). The majority of residents reported supporting a building-wide smoke-free policy (63.0 and 59.9%, respectively). We enrolled 157 NYCHA and 118 comparison non-smoking households into the long…
Black Immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean Have Similar Rates of Diabetes but Africans Are Less Obese
Foreign-Born Blacks Experience Lower Odds of Obesity but Higher Odds of Diabetes than US-Born Blacks in New York City
Prevalence and Correlates of Smoking among Low-Income Adults Residing in New York City Public Housing Developments—2015
The Physical Activity and Redesigned Community Spaces (PARCS) Study
This study represents a rare opportunity to provide robust evidence to further our understanding of the complex relationship between parks and health. Findings will inform future investments in health-oriented urban design policies and offer evidence for addressing health disparities through built environment strategies
