Difficulties in adherence to social distancing and quarantine during the Covid-19 pandemic
Non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) such as social distancing and quarantine were essential for containing COVID-19 transmission but had adverse effects on mental health and well-being. Migrants were often accused of non-adherence to NPIs, which was assumed to partly explain their higher infection rates compared to non-migrants. However, this perspective overlooked that migrants may have faced greater challenges adhering to interventions due …
Psychological distress, loneliness, and satisfaction with life during the Covid-19 pandemic
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted migrants' health and well-being, with some effects becoming evident months into the crisis. Psychological distress, loneliness, and satisfaction with life, which are indicators closely tied to mental health and well-being, were critically affected during the pandemic. However, comparative longitudinal studies of these parameters across migrant and non-migrant population remain scarce. …
Cultural tightrope walkers
The study of participants' narrative identities reveals ways of coping with these transitions, revealing how participants continuously reconstruct their self-narratives to adapt to their new cultural environment. The findings suggest that while acculturation is a challenging process characterized by psychological tension and existential vulnerability, it can also foster personal resilience and new opportunities for meaning-making. The research co…
Recreational activities and psychological distress during the Covid-19 crisis
These findings suggest that there are links between recreational activities and psychological distress during a crisis, with cultural audience participation possibly reducing distress over time
Mental health trajectories and peer refugee helper engagement, among Afghan, Iranian and Syrian refugees and asylum seekers in Greece
Peer Refugee Helpers (PRHs) support peers in humanitarian settings, which may influence their own mental health. This longitudinal study examined anxiety and depression trajectories among Afghan, Iranian and Syrian refugees and asylum seekers in Greece, focusing on how PRH status (paid/unpaid) and sense of coherence influence trajectory membership. The study included 176 adult, PRHs and non-helpers. The following scales were administered three ti…
Factors associated with mental health outcomes among peer refugee helpers in Greece
An increasing number of people are engaged in humanitarian responses worldwide as aid workers. Peer Refugee Helpers (PRHs) are refugees or asylum seekers engaged formally in humanitarian assistance through Aid/Humanitarian Organizations, yet the factors affecting their mental health are poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the mental health of PRHs and explore factors that may contribute to anxiety and depression in this group throug…
Attitudes towards depression and its treatment among white, hispanic, and multiracial adults
Findings supported previous research that indicates different U.S. racial/ethnic group ideas of depression and its treatment are potentially linked with cultural values, and we suggest that investigating these more fine-grained group differences can help to inform treating professionals as well as public health messages
Stress and coping strategies among youth during the Covid-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic caused a worldwide health- and societal crisis. Youth were exposed to enduring stressors. We examined types and load of stressors faced by youth, and their use of coping strategies. A population-based sample within Bergen municipality, Norway (N = 1031, 11–19 years) completed the Response to Stress Questionnaire 9 months into the pandemic. Social stressors were most frequent, with secondary control engagement being the most …
Increased Gaming During Covid-19 Predicts Physical Inactivity Among Youth in Norway—A Two-Wave Longitudinal Cohort Study
Background A concern for the COVID-19 measures and the potential long-term consequences the measures may have on physical inactivity and gaming among youth. Objectives Examine the stability and change in internet and offline gaming and the association with physical inactivity among adolescents in Norway during the pandemic. Methods A total of 2940 youth (58% girls) aged 12–19 years participated in an online longitudinal two-wave survey during the…
Explanatory models of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression among Afghan refugees in Norway
The practice of condensing a single set of EMs within a group may not only be analytically challenging in a time-pressed clinical setting but also misleading. Rather, we advocate asking empathic questions and roughly mapping individual refugee patients' perceptions on causes and treatment as a better starting point for building trusting relationships and inviting patients to share and put into practice their expertise about their own lives
Integration Is Correlated With Mental Health Help-Seeking From the General Practitioner
Despite a seemingly higher need, refugees in Europe tend to underuse mental health (MH) services. To better understand this underuse, it is important to understand refugees' willingness and ability to seek help from their general practitioner (GP) when experiencing MH problems. We employed a combined vignette and survey design to explore how the GP fits into the larger context of help-seeking preferences among a sample of Syrian refugees in Norwa…
We are unlikely to return to the same world, and I do not want it to destroy my future.’ Young people's worries through the outbreak of the Covid‐19 pandemic
This study aims to explore what worries youth were having during the seventh to ninth week of the COVID-19 lockdown. Our findings build on the responses to an open-ended survey question from 1314 youths. The worries covered three main themes: 'That my mom dies, then I am left all alone': worries related to COVID-19 virus infection; 'To me, this is lost youth': worries about the consequences of measures for the present life and near future; and 'I…
Explanatory models and help-seeking for symptoms of PTSD and depression among Syrian refugees
These findings point to the need to consider transformations following forced migration when studying aspects of explanatory models, preferred help-seeking, and coping strategies in refugee groups

Anxiety-Based Personal Values and Perceived Organizational Justice
Intended Self-Presentation Tactics in Job Interviews
Intended self-presentation in job interviews was examined among university students in 10 countries ( N = 3,509). The aim was to assess cross-cultural differences in the endorsement of self-presentation tactics, and whether such differences could be explained by cultural values and socioeconomic variables. The Cultural Impression Management Scale-Applicant Scale (CIM-A) was used that measures assertiveness, individual excellence, accommodation, a…
Cultural fit and ethnic background in the job interview
Employing an experimental design, we investigated how Norwegian managers’ ( N = 78) evaluations and intended hiring decisions varied with job applicants’ ethnic background (immigrant vs. native Norwegian mainstreamer) and the degree to which the candidates’ self-presentation fitted Norwegian cultural norms (level of cultural fit). The participants viewed video clips of applicants whose ethnicity and self-presentation was manipulated. Irrespective…
Managers' Evaluations of Immigrant Job Applicants
This study examined the impact of immigrant job applicants' private domain acculturation preferences on managers' evaluations of person-organization (P-O) fit and hiring decisions. We employed an experimental design and presented Norwegian managers ( N = 74) with video-clips of three job applicants. One of the applicants' (target) ethnicity (Norwegian vs. Turkish) and private domain acculturation preferences (separated, assimilated, and integrate…
Hiring Rankings of Immigrant Job Applicants
Followers' Personality and Leadership
The study presented in this article investigates how the personality of subordinates is related to leadership, an area largely neglected in prior research. Subordinates ( n = 289) rated their immediate superior on transformational, transactional, and passive-avoidant leadership measured by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) and completed the NEO-FFI, with the five traits neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscien…
