Transmission dynamics of Sars-CoV-2 variants in the Brazilian state of Pará
Introduction After three years since the beginning of the pandemic, the new coronavirus continues to raise several questions regarding its infectious process and host response. Several mutations occurred in different regions of the SARS-CoV-2 genome, such as in the spike gene, causing the emergence of variants of concern and interest (VOCs and VOIs), of which some present higher transmissibility and virulence, especially among patients with previ…
Paleogenetic Studies in Guajajara Skeletal Remains, Maranhão State, Brazil
In the early 17th century, French and Portuguese colonizers and Jesuit priests settled in the state of Maranhão and made contact with the Guajajara, an ethnic group that lived along the margins of the Pindaré River. The Guajajara maintained contact with Brazilian national society over the centuries, including with Brazilian admixed populations, and with African slaves that flocked towards the region from the 18th century onwards. The present stud…
Male ancestry structure and interethnic admixture in African‐descent communities from the Amazon as revealed by Y‐chromosome Strs
Some genetic markers on both the Y chromosome and mtDNA are highly polymorphic and population‐specific in humans, representing useful tools for reconstructing the past history of populations with poor historical records. Such lack of information is usually true in the case of recent African‐descent populations of the New World founded by fugitive slaves throughout the slavery period in the Americas, particularly in Brazil, where those communities…
Afro-Derived Amazonian Populations
A panel of Ancestry Informative Markers (AIMs) was used to identify population substructure and estimate individual and overall interethnic admixture in 294 individuals from seven African-derived communities of the Brazilian Amazon. A panel of 48 biallelic markers, representing the insertion (IN) or the deletion (DEL) of small DNA fragments, was employed for this purpose. Overall interethnic admixture estimates showed high miscegenation with othe…
Assessing interethnic admixture using an X‐linked insertion‐deletion multiplex
In this study, a PCR multiplex was optimized, allowing the simultaneous analysis of 13 X‐chromosome Insertion/deletion polymorphisms (INDELs). Genetic variation observed in Africans, Europeans, and Native Americans reveals high inter‐population variability. The estimated proportions of X‐chromosomes in an admixed population from the Brazilian Amazon region show a predominant Amerindian contribution (≅41%), followed by European (≅32%) and African …
Autosomal STR Analyses in Native Amazonian Tribes Suggest a Population Structure Driven by Isolation by Distance
Eleven short tandem repeat loci (CSF1PO, D3S1358, D5S818, D7S820, D8S1179, D13S317, D16S539, D18S51, D21S11, TH01, and TPOX) were investigated in 232 individuals from 6 Amazonian native tribes (Tiriyó, Waiãpi, Zoé, Urubu-Kaapor, Awa-Guajá, and Parakanã). We added the new data to a database that included five previously typed native populations from the same area (Wai Wai, Gavião, Zoró, Suruí, and Xavante). The results presented here concern this …
Mitochondrial Population Genomics Supports a Single Pre-Clovis Origin with a Coastal Route for the Peopling of the Americas
Dissimilarities in the process of formation of curiaú, a semi‐isolated Afro‐Brazilian population of the Amazon region
The genetic consequences of the social policy of the past in relation to the formation of Afro‐Brazilian societies are interesting and have been studied at various biological levels (classical polymorphisms and the mitochondrial and nuclear levels. These allow the estimation of the contribution of African genes and the participation of other ethnic groups in the formation of these communities. With this objective, uniparental systems of exclusive…
Differential contribution of indigenous men and women to the formation of an urban population in the Amazon region as revealed by mtDNA and Y‐dNA
The human populations of the Brazilian Amazon were formed by interethnic crosses between Europeans, Africans, and Amerindians. The relative contribution of men and women of different ethnic groups was not homogeneous, since the social policies of the first three centuries of Brazilian colonization encouraged mating between European men and indigenous women and, later on, African women. In order to test this model based on historical data, we comp…
New protein genetic studies in six Amazonian Indian populations
A total of 732 individuals affiliated with six Amazonian Indian populations were variously studied in relation to 26 protein genetic systems. Eleven of them were found to be monomorphic in these groups, in accordance with previous investigations. Similarities and dissimilarities (the latter involving the Rh, Duffy, haptoglobin and transferrin systems) were observed in relation to earlier investigations in four of these populations (Galibi, Paliko…
Heterogeneity of mitochondrial DNA haplotypes in Pre‐Columbian natives of the Amazon region
We report the first study of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequencing from ancestral Amerindian populations of the South American continent. Sequencing of the D-loop region of mtDNA was carried out for bone fragments from 18 skeletons of Pre-Columbian Amerinidians. The skeletons were excavated in different archeological sites of the Brazilian Amazon region, with dating estimated at 500–4,000 years before the present. The sequencing of at least 354 ba…
