No such thing as a free movie? Cross-country evidence on the potential impact of Avod streaming services
This study investigates potential disruption from advertising-based video-on-demand (AVOD) streaming for new-release in-home films. Using stated-preference discrete choice experiments on representative samples from four major countries, we model demand and examine substitution patterns between AVOD and the incumbent transactional video-on-demand (TVOD) model. In addition, we consider illegal streaming alternatives, including the possibility of us…
On the judicial annulment of the ‘domestic’ trade moratorium in South African rhinoceros horn
The legalization of rhino horn ‘domestic’ trade in South Africa potentially unleashes market forces featuring new entry, new tastes and new rhino horn products. This risks escalating the rhino-poaching crisis further. It is argued that institutional contradictions have been engendered by the South African High Court ruling in Kruger and another v Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs and others [2015] JOL 34725 , whose assumptions are shown…

Advice for Improving Memory
The idea that human memory can be improved appears to be as ancient as the concept of memory itself. For centuries, authors have promised that using artificial mnemonical systems can improve remembering. However, in the late nineteenth century many authors of memory improvement texts emphasized the importance of enhancing natural memory as opposed to developing artificial memory systems. In doing so, they portrayed natural memory as something ana…
The reputation of Kenneth James William Craik
Reputation is a familiar concept in everyday life and in a range of academic disciplines. There have been studies of its formation, its content, its management, its diffusion, and much else besides. This article explores the reputation of the Cambridge psychologist Kenneth Craik (1914-1945). Having examined something of Craik's life and work and the content of his reputation, the article concentrates on the functions that Craik's reputation has s…

An Asymmetric Relationship
Warren McCulloch held Kenneth Craik’s work in high regard. What was the source of this high regard and did this good opinion mean that Craik’s work had any effect on McCulloch’s own work? Aspects of Craik and McCulloch’s backgrounds are examined to help explain McCulloch’s views: the important place of philosophy in their education and some shared philosophical positions, their attraction to work in diverse disciplines, a respect for the science …

Information" has become a widely used term in psychology, especially within cognitive psychology. However, despite its status as a technical term, the word now rarely receives explicit definition. By contrast, when information entered the vocabulary of psychologists in the late 1940s, it had an explicit mathematical definition largely derived from developments in information theory. This article examines how information entered psychology, how it…
The Kitty Genovese murder and the social psychology of helping
This article argues that an iconic event in the history of helping research -- the story of the 38 witnesses who remained inactive during the murder of Kitty Genovese -- is not supported by the available evidence. Using archive material, the authors show that there is no evidence for the presence of 38 witnesses, or that witnesses observed the murder, or that witnesses remained inactive. Drawing a distinction between the robust bystander research…
The embodiment of reconciliation
Frederic Bartlett (1886-1969) was one of the most prominent figures in British academic psychology during the 20th century. His psychological work has had a mixed reception, but there is no doubt that it continues to be much cited. Bartlett and his work have also attracted considerable historical attention both within history of ideas accounts and in attempts to understand the establishment of British academic psychology. The present article argu…
An intimate connection
In this article, the author argues that a number of conditions conspired to place the Cambridge psychologist Oliver Zangwill in a pivotal position for pursuing and promoting neuropsychology in Britain after World War II. In broad terms, these were the background and experience of Zangwill himself, the practical engagement of psychologists with patients with brain damage, neurologists, and psychiatrists, the introduction of medical reform includin…
Chinese Educationalists in Malaysia
During 2002 the Malaysian government announced that English would be the language of instruction used in all primary schools to teach science and math. This decision was called “The Final Solution” by Chinese educationalists. This article shows how these professionals have sought to safeguard the character of Chinese primary schools, important transmitters of identity from one generation to the next, by acting as a pressure group against this new…

Resisting a Diagnostic Technique
This paper looks at the deployment of a medical technique, reflex anal dilatation and contrasts the way in which its deployment was a subject of enormous controversy in the Cleveland child sexual abuse affair with its comparatively unproblematic previous use to identify homosexuality. We interpret this contrast using two general frameworks: recent work in the sociology of scientific knowledge, particularly actor-network theory, and Foucauldian wo…

Phonological priming of lexical retrieval in speech production
We report a series of three experiments exploring phonological priming effects in speech production. In all cases, subjects repeated aloud auditorily presented primes and then named picture targets. Experiment 1 showed that targets were named faster when prime and target shared phonemes but only when these occupied the same word or syllabic positions. Experiment 2 showed that the degree of facilitation was unaffected by the lexicality of the prim…
