The present study attempts to show why the growing influence of Newtonianism in the period 1700-1750 led to the development of the novel and to the degeometrization of forms in the visual arts. It also tries to show why things changed again after 1750, when new advances in the life sciences and in chemistry led to the coining of a new term, 'perfectibility', …
