Smoke-free signage in public parks
This study provides evidence on the impact of smoke-free signage not supported by local ordinance in public parks using a reproducible measure. States, especially those with a preemptive clause legislation, may benefit from incorporating smoke-free signage in public areas to protect community members from exposure to tobacco smoke, reduce littering, and denormalise smoking
Cracking down on youth tobacco may influence drug use
This study evaluated the influence of tobacco possession–use–purchase (PUP) law enforcement and illicit drug use and offers. Twenty‐four towns were randomly assigned into two conditions. Both conditions focused on reducing minors' access to commercial sources of tobacco. The communities assigned to the experimental condition also increased their PUP law enforcement, whereas among communities in the control condition, PUP law enforcement remained …
Frequency and citations of published authors in two community psychology journals
The current study examined the development of community psychology through publications in the main journals of the field, the American Journal of Community Psychology (AJCP) and Journal of Community Psychology (JCP). The investigation assessed which individuals played a major role in shaping the field through their publications by recording information from every citation in AJCP and JCP since the journals started in 1973 through 2004. Each auth…
Effects of Youth Tobacco Access and Possession Policy Interventions on Heavy Adolescent Smokers
This study evaluated the effects of tobacco PUP (Purchase, Use and Possession) laws on tobacco use patterns among students in twenty-four towns, which were randomly assigned into an experimental and a control group. The experimental group involved both PUP law enforcement and reducing minors' access to commercial sources of tobacco, and the condition for the control group involved only efforts to reduce minors' access to commercial sources of tob…
The Effect of Enforcement History and Ordinance Provisions on Merchant Compliance With Tobacco-Control Laws
Two studies examined merchant compliance with tobacco-sales laws. The first study examined the efficacy of assessing merchant compliance with tobacco-sales laws at the community level in a longitudinal, multitown intervention. Results indicated that individual merchants' compliance was consistent in communities involved in a tobacco-control intervention. The second study investigated the impact of history of involvement in a tobacco-control inter…
A randomized trial evaluating tobacco possession-use-purchase laws in the USA
Ranking institutional settings based on publications in community psychology journals
Two primary outlets for community psychology research, the American Journal of Community Psychology and the Journal of Community Psychology, were assessed to rank institutions based on publication frequency and scientific influence of publications over a 32‐year period. Three specific periods were assessed (1973–1983, 1984–1994, 1995–2004). Findings indicate that there were a large group of institutions that published articles during these period…
Youth Supplying Tobacco to Other Minors
Current smoking among young adolescents
The analytic approach used to examine contextual effects using individuals' reports of peer tobacco use norms that were aggregated to obtain a context measure of the school norms may produce statistical artefacts that distort the association of the school context in general, and peer tobacco use norms in particular, with increased risk for current smoking beyond the risk associated with individual factors
Selling Tobacco to Minors
The present study investigated whether clerks in retail establishments that sell tobacco products can accurately estimate the age of a minor. Two Caucasian females, aged 16-years-old, participated as Field Agents in the present study. One Field Agent entered 49 retail establishments and the other Field Agent entered a different group of 51 retail establishments to conduct a tobacco compliance check. Later in the same day, each Field Agent entered…
Evaluating the effects of enforcements and fines on youth smoking
Restricting access to retail sources of tobacco and fining minors for possession of tobacco products were evaluated as possible strategies to reduce the rising rates of teenage smoking. Four towns were assigned to enforce both tobacco minimum-age-of sales laws and tobacco possession laws (P). The remaining four towns were assigned to enforce only tobacco minimum-age-of sales laws (NP). Tobacco use among sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students …

Eliminating Invalid Self-Report Survey Data
A sample of 6,370 students in Grades 6 to 8 completed a questionnaire on their attitudes and use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. A subsample showed questionable data based on three criteria: missing responses, invalid responses, and inconsistent responses. Analysis indicated that this subsample was significantly different from the main group on demographic variables and self-reported life-time tobacco use. Results support efforts to identif…
Passive versus active consent
Considerable discussion has occurred over the past few years concerning the issue of passive versus active consent in psychological research involving children and adolescents. Some evaluators believe that passive consent should only be used in very restricted cases while other investigators are more comfortable in using passive consent that utilizes anonymous survey instruments which have minimal risk to the participants. The issue of passive ve…
Putting the Community Back into Prevention
An evaluation of the short‐term impact of a media‐based substance abuse prevention programme
A state‐wide substance abuse prevention programme, entitled KidsInTouch, incorporated a multifaceted approach involving: (a) media‐based interventions; and (b) parent training workshops. KidsInTouch was targeted at parents and their children, ages five to 12 years. The media‐based interventions attempted to increase children's and parents' awareness and knowledge about substance abuse and prevention. In addition, the intervention advertised and s…
