Modeling Fear of Crime in Dallas Neighborhoods
This study tested a model of the effects of different predictors on individuals' levels of fear of crime in Dallas neighborhoods. Given its dual focus on individual perceptions and community-level interactions, social capital theory was selected as the most appropriate framework to explore fear of crime within the neighborhood milieu. A structural equation model was developed and tested. Several positive influences of social capital on lowering f…
An Evaluation of a Family Strengthening Program for Substance Abuse Offenders
Family strengthening programs have been shown to be effective in preventing many types of problems with children. This study expands on prior research by evaluating the effectiveness of a family strengthening program for substance abuse offenders. Results indicate that the program is associated with significant changes on the four main variables of concern to program staff and funders: family resilience, opportunities for pro-social involvement o…
Ethnic families in America
This enlightening study offers an inclusive approach to multi-cultural diversity in the U.S, with extensive coverage of the family life styles, traditions and values of seventeen American ethnic groups. Providing unique and personal insights, each chapter is written by a contributing author representing a particular ethnic group, and structured in a similar pattern - covering the historical background, key ethnic cultural components, traditional …
The Use of Social Services by Hispanic Elderly
The present study develops and tests a causal model of formal social service use by Mexican American, Puerto Rican and Cuban elderly. Path analytic procedures were used to evaluate the model on a national area probability sample of 1,805 noninstitutionalized elderly. The findings indicate that predictors of use, in general, differ by subgroups in terms of their relative importance, predictive power, complexity, and overall patterns. Implications …
Alienation Among Vietnamese Refugees in the United States
The purpose of this study was to develop and test a causal model of alienation among a probability sample of Vietnamese refugees. Path analysis was used to test the causal model. The findings indicated that marital status, social support, social interaction anxiety, self-identity, and length of time in the United States directly predict feelings of alienation. The social support variable, however, was the most important predictor. An interesting …

Factors Influencing the Decision of Minority Students to Attend Graduate Schools of Social Work
This study of 255 minority students enrolled in Graduate Schools of Social Work examined factors which influenced them to decide to attend these schools. The most frequently mentioned reasons were the curriculum and location of the school followed by prestige, financial incentives, emphasis on minority concerns and influence of significant others. Those schools which attracted greater numbers of minorities tended to attract them on the basis of c…
A Multidimensional Approach to Religiosity and Disengagement
This study of 106 elderly Central Missourians examines religious behavior as an indication of "disengagement." It is argued that religiosity must be measured in both organizational forms such as attending religious services and the more subjective nonorganizational forms including prayer and listening to religious services and music on radio and television before an assessment of "disengagement" is made. Following Hochschild (1975) it is argued t…

Extended Kinship Relations in Black and White Families
This study is an attempt to compare and explain the differences in extended family cohesion of black and white families. The black family is not approached as deviant or pathological, but from the view of a separate subculture within a pluralistic society. Comparisons were made in terms of both intensity and extensity of interaction of black and white families with their extended kin. Specific comparisons were made of contact and help patterns, n…
Kinship Affiliation
This study concerned the effects of kinship affiliation on marital stability. The argument suggests that disjunctive affiliations which imply segregated role relationships and close-knit networks also imply unilateral kinship affiliation. Unilateral kinship affiliation is apt to lead to an asymmetry of power in the family which in turn leads to an acceptance of divorce as a way out of the problem. A sample of 82 families was investigated and reve…
