Women and Self-Help Culture
Simonds writes about women's approach to reading. She is most interested in books directed primarily toward women. These books offer advice about managing relationships, enhancing sexuality, developing self-esteem, becoming assertive, and improving our spiritual lives. Simonds looks at hundreds of books, including such well-known ones as Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique, Robin Norwood's Women Who Love Too Much, Harold Kushner's When Bad Thin…

Careers in Feminism
In the early days of the second wave of the women's movement, women on the liberal end of the feminist spectrum began to work together on issues of equity in economics and education. They developed strategies for lobbying for legislation and administrative regulations affecting women and began to build political networks through which they could accomplish reforms. Women associated with the Women's Equity Action League played an important part in…

Good Times and Good Works
This paper develops the concept of sociability work as a distinct and important form of labor. One place to observe this work is in the activities of women in the volunteer world who promote charitable causes. Using data from a study of volunteer workers in a metropolitan area, I show how the shape of this labor and its evaluation are affected by the social organization of work and gender. Women who are successful in charitable work take pride in…

Education
Current discussions of education from Jenck's Inequality Coleman's recent controversial pronouncements on desegregation orders and white flight concentrate on the efficacy of educational reform. The articles in this anthology, collected from two issues of the journal Problems, all consider this topic. The volume is divided into six sections, each exploring different aspects of education. In an introductory essay the editors state the theme of the…

The Distancing of Emotion in Ritual [and Comments and Reply]
There is an ambivalence toward ritual in social science. On the one hand, it is seen as immensely valuable to the individual and to society. On the other hand, there is an underlying feeling that ritual is impotent. This paper presents a theory of the distancing of emotion which integrates the positive and negative orientations toward ritual. The theory links ritual to the process of catharsis of repressed emotion, which subsumes the positive ori…

Current State of the Sociology of Occupations
This report is a review of the recent literature (mostly since the mid 60s) of the sociology of occupations. The notion of measuring professionalism, especially as represented by the attribute approach, has failed to deal with crucial sociological issues. The sociology of occupations has been criticized for being without an overall theory, but the search for such a theory may not be a justified goal. Work in this field has produced many interesti…

Advisory and Coercive Functions in Psychiatry
Two questions about professional practice rarely arise: the use of control in expert-client relations and the effect of different settings on the styles of practice. This paper presents the historical development of the mandates, for both control and advice, which pervade psychiatric practice. Though the presence of expertise always implies an element of control, usage varies according to opportunities and constraints provided by each setting. An…
