Finding strength in adversity
Our findings confirm that protective mechanisms are critical for enhanced wellbeing and adaptive coping, and decreased stress and maladaptive coping. Interventions that increase these protective factors may influence young adult refugee wellbeing, particularly for those who experience discrimination
Power sharing in community-engaged research with Syrian refugees in Lebanon
Our study assesses the community-engaged research approach (CEnR) followed during the planning phase for a randomized controlled trial designed to assess how young adult Syrian refugees living in the Bekaa region of Lebanon implementing PM+ with adults in their community will be impacted themselves. We aim to describe the community-engaged research process implemented in our study, and the impact of community engagement on the process of adaptati…
Impact of minimum unit pricing on youth alcohol consumption
This paper analyses the impact of introducing an alcohol minimum unit pricing policy on youth’s off-premise alcohol consumption. We rely on price elasticities derived using stated preference alcohol purchase data from a survey of 1024 university students in Lebanon. Selectively targeting drinks with high ethanol concentration by applying a minimum unit pricing (MUP) corresponding to the maximum price that respondents are willing to pay per bevera…

Bullying Victimization and Use of Substances in High School
A community–based system dynamics approach for understanding factors affecting mental Health and Health seeking behaviors in Beirut and Beqaa regions of Lebanon
BACKGROUND: Available evidence on mental health and psychosocial problems in Lebanon is limited. Recent quantitative data suggests a high prevalence among Syrian refugees and their Lebanese host communities, with significant treatment gaps in both populations. This study aims to determine how Lebanese host and Syrian refugee communities perceive mental health, and identify health seeking behaviors and barriers to health access in two contrasting …

The impact of broad-based vs targeted taxation on youth alcohol consumption in Lebanon
This study aims to model youth’s off-premise alcohol demand and forecasts ethanol intake responsiveness to alcohol taxes. Using stated preference alcohol purchase data from a survey of 1024 university students in Lebanon, we derive price elasticities that we use to forecast the effects of two excise tax scenarios on overall ethanol intake. The first scenario imposes a broad-based 20% tax on all types of alcoholic beverages, and the second scenari…
Everyone Has the Right to Drink Beer”
Our findings indicate that alcohol harm reduction policies are far from becoming a policy priority in Lebanon. There is a clear need to shift the narrative from victim blaming to structural conditions
Surveying Alcohol Outlet Density in Four Neighborhoods of Beirut Lebanon
Underage drinking among youth in Lebanon is increasing. Regulating availability is one of the best buy policies recommended by the World Health Organization. To quantitatively document the current status of alcohol availability to youth in Lebanon, we used GPS technology to survey alcohol outlet density in four highly populated neighborhoods in Beirut, Lebanon, and to estimate their proximity to educational institutions. The density of alcohol ou…
There Is Zero Regulation on the Selling of Alcohol
Alcohol-related research from the Arab world has rarely touched on the experiences or views of Arab adolescents. In this article, we present an in-depth analysis of youth alcohol drinking patterns and determinants derived from focus group discussions completed with more than 100 Lebanese high school/vocational students (15-19 years). The social ecology of alcohol use framework guided our research and analysis. Findings reveal that alcohol drinkin…

Postponing sexual debut among university youth
This study aimed to investigate gender differences in reasoning influencing the postponing of sexual debut among university youth in Lebanon. Findings aimed to develop understandings that might help inform future research on, and programme implementation of, young people's reproductive and sexual health. A cross-sectional survey of sexuality and sexual practices, attitudes and perceptions was conducted among private university students in Lebanon…
Cell Phone and Face-to-face Interview Responses in Population-based Surveys
Findings on the reliability and cost-effectiveness of the use of cellular phones vis-à-vis face-to-face interviews in investigating health behaviors and conditions are presented for a national epidemiological sample from Lebanon. Using self-reported responses on identical questions, percentage agreement, κ statistics, and McNemar’s test were used to make the comparisons. Concordance was almost perfect (κ statistics, κ > .8) for measures including…
Factors associated with alcohol and/or drug use at sexual debut among sexually active university students
Findings stress the importance of sexuality education for youth, and the need to begin understanding the true interplay--beyond association--between youth sexual practices and substance use behaviors from a broader public health perspective
Promoting healthy eating and physical activity among school children
Health-E-PALS" intervention is a promising innovative, theory-based, culturally sensitive intervention to promote healthy eating habits and physical activity in Lebanese school children with a potential to be scaled up, replicated and sustained
Giving Consent without Getting Informed
Informed consent forms (ICFs) maintain the integrity of research ethics and preserve participants' rights. Using cross-sectional online survey data on sexuality and sexual practices of private university students from Lebanon, this paper questions whether participants thoroughly read ICFs, and whether time taken to read ICFs is associated with data completeness. A total of 2,534 surveys were completed; a median time of 18.66 seconds was taken to …
