Developing cultural competence in working with Korean immigrant families
The authors provide an in‐depth examination of the historical background, cultural values, family roles, and community contexts of Korean Americans as an aid to both researchers and clinicians in developing cultural competence with this particular group. Health Insurance for Women Who Have Left the Tanf Rolls
Interviews with 215 recent welfare leavers are summarized. Women's access to health care, their health status, and rates of unmet need were examined. The impact of prior mental health contacts on these issues was also examined. About 31% were uninsured. Women in poorer health were more likely to have insurance than women in better health. This was not true for mental health; women were equally likely to lack insurance regardless of mental health …
Ethnic and Cultural Variations in Anger Regulation and Attachment Patterns Among Korean American and European American Male Batterers
This study examined relationships among ethnicity, self-construals, and 2 risk factors for marital violence (anger, insecure attachment) in Korean American and European American male batterers. Korean (vs. European) American batterers experienced more anger and controlled their anger less. Independent self-construal was positively associated with anger experience and anger control and mediated the influence of ethnicity on anger control. Korean b…

Treatment rationales for 2 widely used and empirically supported interventions, cognitive therapy (CT) and time-limited dynamic psychotherapy (TLDP), were examined for their perceived credibility among 136 Asian American college students. Effects of early physical maturation and accelerated pubertal changes on symptoms of major depression were examined in 639 African American children. Three rival hypotheses, early timing, off-time, and stressful change, were tested using 2 waves of data (mean ages = 11 and 13 years). The pubertal effect operates differently according to children's gender and age. For girls, early maturation was consistently associated with elevated levels of depr…

Few viable theoretical models of risk and protective factors for adolescent substance use have been empirically tested on diverse populations. The purpose of this study was twofold. First, the cross‐cultural validity of Oetting and Beauvais' (1987) peer cluster theory was tested on a sample of Asian American youth.
