In proposing a ‘translation turn’ in cultural studies in 1998, Bassnett and Lefevere suggested the possibility of reversing the course of intellectual curiosity. To study translation as a representation of the Mexican nation on the basis of a catalogue of translations spanning three centuries, I propose a classification method inspired by some concepts of nationalism studies. Indeed, a good part of what we know about pre-Hispanic times has been revealed through translations.
